Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

We have it on as background noise while we are doing other things. I can't sit and watch TV, because I fall asleep. I just can't sit idle, but when I try to go to bed at night, my brain suddenly starts thinking of all the things I could do, like new coop designs, fast growing shrubs/trees to use for the hedgerow... other trees/plants for the food forest, LOL I actually only sleep about 3 hours a night. :th

Nothing to clap for imho.
Or….
Are you going to change the ordinances for keeping roosters all over the world Shad?
Nooo, but I might be interested in some effective control on keeping chickens in unsuitable conditions in an urban environment.;)
As you should know, I'm not the slightest bit interested in keepers convenience or the plethora of reasons for keeping chickens from it's all about organic man, to they make such cuddly pets, to it's my right to mistreat the other creatures in the world exactly how I please.

I'm just interested in what's best for the chicken and learning what I can about that.

I don't own a TV. I never have.

Speaking of management, there are four cockerels being butchered tomorrow. I brought out a plate of snacks and while Riddick was "handing" them out, these four boys were harassing the pullets, driving them off from the food or trying to mate them. It was definitely stressing everyone out. So I'll get up at dawn and butcher, dad will build a fire for the parts we don't eat, and in a few days everyone will settle back in.
I used my new net to catch them, so much easier considering my neck injury!
Hopefully Riddick and the ladies forgive me for giving them a treat then scaring everyone to crate up the unruly boys.
You can see the four grey boys with silver collars in the back. There are two much smaller, more timid cockerels that get to stay for now.

I do not want to run the gamble of too many maturing males at once, since there will be young chicks brooding and integrating soon.

I love bantam cochins, they're such sweet little bowling balls. ❤️ I almost bought a pair of calico bantam cockerels early this summer.
The way I see it, any individual hen may have the mothering gene. I've even seen posts where leghorns and production reds have gone broody and successfully raised chicks!

She has bukbukked at her chicks to come over to me, but they aren't brave enough.

PITA is a leghorn based mix, and not only broody, but has been an exemplary mother.

for a baseline breed that doesn't go broody, she's fantastic....and 4 years old....and lost her sister earlier this spring to reproduction issues. She's never been broody before, and has always been a Pain In The A%$ towards other broodies. Now she's co-brooding up to 20 chicks.

This really is the best chicken name ever! It sounds so gentle and innocent when said out loud, like Pippa or Peppa or something. 😆
