Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If I had known you wanted to rehome some hens I would have taken one or two with Glais.:love
I needed to rehome some birds to make space for more broodies to have more youngsters. I expect the same problem will persist, so if there are any that you are particularly keen on, let me know.

I stopped being fussy about things like breed, unless I know the exact provenance of the particular chicken, a long time ago. The vast majority of the heritage chickens are nothing like the original breed now apart from some resemblance in looks. Lima, a scruffy close to death Ex Battery hen when I first met her will remain one of my all time loves.

We need to talk...:p I'll do a PM in the next couple of days.

Gone off to check my honey stock.

I'm jealous of all the people getting lovely @Perris chickens now!

Having looked into the price and availability of recycled plastic sheet and bar and found my rivet gun, I think I can build a small coop that does what I have found works for me and the chickens.
Something like this, with some minor alterations to enable an auto pop door would be ideal.

I built this in Catalonia, along with a number of other coops some of which are in my coop page article.
I have something slightly similar that the previous plot tennant made using a small chest freezer. Needs fixing up and a good clean but it might actually work well for chicks, or if I have a chicken ill or injured enough to need separating from the others.

Same here!

A few anomalies here and there have made it clear that after three or four generations of almost no outcrossing, some “new blood” is needed.
There was a completely failed attempt over the summer (that only few of you know about), where I’d hoped to introduce Araucana and dongxiang lukedanji blood into the group.
Hoping to try again in the coming spring.

Unless Perris would like to book a flight for Greece and bring a certain Mr. Talgarth along… :p

I'd love to, but I don't think they'd let him through airport security :gig
“Sir… No sir, I said that you need to raise your arms… your wings above your head and touch your fingertips… umm, feathertips together… Sir! Sir! You can’t go waving… what did you just do?! These are brand new shoes!

“Sir, you’ll have to step out of line now while we wand you…”
