Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Matewan is the closest town in West Virginia but Huntington is only a couple hours maybe closer.

On the map you are coming into the southern part of West Virginia.

You are not far from Princeton, Beckley, and Bluefield.

If you go from Matewan To Beckley and travel on Interstate 77 south will take you to Bluefield and you get on Route 52 it will take you to Welch.

I grew up 11 miles outside Welch in Asco and attended school in Davy.

McDowell County is the southern most county in West Virginia where there are plenty of coal fields.

I think I should shut up as I am just rambling.

I have been to Beckley and Bluefield is where I in processed to the Army before going to Fort Sill for basic training. I am very familiar with that part of the country. My dad hauled coal throughout the region and during summer I would ride with him. 😁

@Shadrach here is some pics of my roosters. The dark red one is ornery and often challenges our dominant rooster.

Their mud boots are quite striking :hmm Seeking the upside (as always :D) does the mud-shit bath smother the scaly leg mites, or provide any other benefit to their skin?
I guess it must. It would need to be a lot deeper to do their legs though and I would rather more conventional treatments.

Same here with the cross-breed bantam cockerel vs ex-batts. I thought it was lack of experience since he started only three weeks ago, but I realize reading you it's probably unavoidable.

I wonder if he somehow knows because he only goes with the three smaller ex-batts even though two of them are on the more aggressive side with him.
The Catalan bantams were not remotely interested in the Marans hens. I'm sure size had something to do with it.

Don't they eat more (if they have enough, that is..) due to the cold?

We've also got some cold here for the last week or so. Today it's gone up a bit to 0 /32 and we're finally getting two days of snow/rain in a row! Hurray!
Other chicken keepers I know say they do. I've never measured cold weather food intake v summer, partly because when chickens are free ranging it's almost impossible to tell. One can only judge by their consumption of commercial feed and that was/is variable depending on forage.
