Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I went and bought 5 lites of wood paint this morning for the new coop base and the old coop when it get refurbished.
Got it home, put it in my rucksack and later headed off to the train station. At the station which was quite busy, i took my rucksack off and it slipped out of my hand. This was the result.
Believe it or not I didn't swear. There were a couple of Asian families with small children close by and for once my brain worked and much to my surprise what came out of my mouth was "Oh dear."
One of the Asian little girls got given a plastic bag by her mum to bring over to me. So sweet.

Needless to write I was not in the best of moods on arival at the allotments. I was even less so when I discovered that the bag of feed I mentioned my friend had brought to the allotments had been opened and some fed to the chickens.
You may recall that I'm worming them with flubenvet pellets and that is all they are suposed to have for seven days!:he
I swore when I discovered that.:p
Fortunately I was able to reclaim about one third of the spilt paint and most of the frame now has one coat on. Hopefully I'll get the rest done tomorrow if it doesn't rain or any other disasters happen.
I'll be doing a bit of washing in the morning. I got paint everywhere.

Dropping things becomes more possible as we get older.. I can attest to that.

Arggg, sorry for you, one of those days you wish you could start again. I believe Henry's legendary British attitude is rubbing off on you because " oh dear" and taking a picture, is certainly much milder than what one would expect from anyone having that experience.
On the other hand I also suspect they weren't your best clothes if you were intending to paint in them, so the stains could be considered collateral damage :p
I imagine it would have been a lot worse were it not for the donated plastic bag; the kindness of strangers is the best sort :love.
Good thing the paint was a nice green and not orange or pink. I agree that seeing that little girl try to help certainly made things less painful than having people laughing at you!

I've always dropped things since I was a child, because of not paying sufficient attention. I certainly hope it doesn't get worse 😬.

:gig Can you imagine - an orange and/or pink coop base! It would look like the coop was sitting on an enormous fruit salad (a kiddies' sweet that Shad will no doubt remember but may be unfamiliar to any non-UK readers) Found a piccy on wikipedia

Yesterday morning was a bit of fun as I kept trying to lock the chicks inside their pen, and they kept finding new holes to escape. The cats did not spot them but the Gallicus Circaetus (short toed snake eagle ?) did. We put chicken wire last night in all the places the chicks escaped yesterday, so they are out this morning under supervision.

Theo's encounter with them yesterday didn't end as I expected. What do you think, is he attacking the chicks, or putting the broody back in place ?

I haven't seen a roo do that, so am not at all sure about an explanation, but it looks to me like he's going for the broody rather than the chicks. The roos here approach slowly, lower their heads near the chicks, and then hold still for minutes while they imprint on the chicks.

then added bran when they were a bit older
These chicks are a week old, and I thought I'd introduce them to chopped bran flakes (here mixed with some rolled (porridge) oats) moistened with milk. I'm reading Poultry for Farm and Home 1921, and it is really keen on giving milk. They seem to like it

They've got such pretty colors already!
How is Venka doing?

I've got a bunch of baby Dustin's here, they've managed to escape again and I'm not successful in getting them back inside. They're putting to practice the freedom vs safety debate 😔.
Venka is doing great thanks; completely back to normal, bar one wonky feather in her left wing.
If your Dustins are that good, they may well evade predators too. Thinking about it, you trying to catch them is giving them plenty of practice in that department!
