Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

As you might have read: she back!
I don’t think the cat is feral. Real feral cats are a bit bigger. And this one looked very healthy and looked after.

If I set out a live trap for cats, I need to check several times a day. There are 4 neighbouring cat’s hanging around in our garden every day. 2 at night too. One neighbour has a 24/7 pop door for cats. They behave as if our garden is theirs too. Not so strange, bc I feed them when their owners are away on a trip/vacation ( = quit often).
And beside these 4 there are more domestic cats in the neighbourhood, I wouldn’t like to harm.
Delighted to hear Janice is back; what a relief.
In our previous house we had a problem with local cats using our garden as a toilet, and someone told me a tip for a deterrent that worked (though none of us know why it does). Get a 1.5/2 litre plastic bottle (the sort soft drinks are sold in) and half fill it with water. Screw the cap back on and lay it horizontally on the lawn. That's it. Worked for us; the cats stayed out of our garden while it was there.

Wow your feed contains animal by products! Tallow and cow meal! No mad cow disease in NZ or did your government handle the restrictions differently ?

I can't believe a list of ingredients where the main ingredient is "some kind of grain". This could be anything ! So I guess we have better labels here because it wouldn't be possible.
I definitely believe that balanced doesn't mean good for you, the ingredients matter too. It's the debate we're having for human in France on nutriscore where some highly processed food still get an A. I saw that with my cats also...in some of the feeds perfect balance is achieved through additives and animal products are one of the last ingredient ! I think it matters to know if the first ingredient of the feed is wheat, triticale or corn.

I think I'm hearing my partner talk. Yesterday my neighbor gave us somme pulled pork for us, we don't like this stuff so he gave it to the hens. When I told him it's not balanced and good for their health he said he didn't give a damn because he'd rather make them happy before they died 😭. (They never get that kind of food, I must add, so it was really a special treat).
Not sure what I should write here...
Sorry I sound like your partner or I hope it makes you feel more at home.:p:lol:

However it claims that this ability only come at two months of age, and that before that pullet must be fed in very specific ways. I wonder if this is due to the fact that the hen population they study are not raised by broodies ?
I'm sure you're right. Thanks again for that link; it is a great article, and I've made loads of notes.

Good morning to y’all. From a happy woman! Janice is back!

She was free ranging very close to the coop. Wanted to get in for some commercial feed. My hubby gave some scratch as a reward for surviving.

I hope its safe to let them free range during the morning an early afternoon again. So far we spottet the cat only around 6 pm. And most cats do have a routine if I remember correct. I learned this from an experiment/ BBC documentary.

I suppose this is a joke.
Translate this to humans. Any foodstuffs not provided by Unilever isn’t a balanced feed. :he:gig

P.s @Ribh What I have learned: a little cracked corn in winter is healthy. So is hemp seed.
Pleased to read Jancie turned up. I don't like not finding a body should a chicken go missing.

Yep, it's a sort of joke. Had a bad humour day yesterday.
