Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

My new pens aren't really coops at all. I like to keep the tribes separated into small groups. Most tribes have about six birds with the biggest group having 9. I'll not build another closed in coop especially after this blistering hot summer. My runs wouldn't be secure enough for most locations but here the threat of predators is low.

Would please post some pictures of your run buildings?

I would like to see them and possibly use the idea for my chickens.

Yes I would love to see them also. I allow tree sleeping where that works, and once we move I will encourage it if viable. I have found tree guards designed to keep possums out of trees, which will also prevent ferrets getting up there, thus making the trees the safest sleeping place. Ferrets are about my only predator concern. Right now I have no predator issues but when we move we will be in a less busy built area and they could well be a threat.

Our newer coops/pens. Built under the former carport. The garage is on the north side and provides protection from the winter wind. rain primarily comes from the west so I left the metal on the bottom of the west side.

summer breeze is from the southeast so the south and east sides are open.

east side has space for one more smaller run for the 2 Guineas and the blind chick. In the winter we'll wrap the exterior with thick plastic as necessary.

Is that chicken wire?

For me this short life and severe heath issues are a very important reason not wanting ex-batts. I find it hard to coop with sick animals and rather impossible to kill them if they get sick.

I started to read the article about chicken euthanasia. But it made me too sad to finish it.

I respect highly what you do to help others peoples chickens and agree that this vet asks for a horrible fee to euthanise. There are more vets who aren’t nice at all. When I was a child I hated the vet in our village too. And I wanted to become one as a young teenager. Doing it better, with respect for animals and children. But discovering that part of the work is euthanising animals. The ambition stopped completely.

If I ever need pain relief for a chicken I hope to get the right advice on how much (for 1/2 kg chicken ) and how to administer it.
I couldn't be a vet, but I would have liked to have studied veterinary science.

that they're at either end of the roost? that they're mingling with alternatively-feathered friends? that they're there at all? I give up; what do you want us to note about them? 🤪
Tsk, Tsk, you're not keeping up Perris.:D
It's the Legbars and Matilda who have all wanted to roost with Henry. If two or three will roost in the new coop, then later, when the time comes they all have to move, things should be a little easier.
Them roosting in the new coop also means the coop is more comfortable than the old coop, which they can still access. and this includes ventilation.
The Ex Battery hens took to it fairly quickly and that is partly because they roost on the floor.

Oh, and while I'm here; another feed for you.
