Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I am not much into desserts, sugar to me is very addictive and I feel better when I don’t consume it. Hard decision, but better for me in the long run!

I think of the US as the creators of Buffalo Wings, Philly Cheesesteaks, and Peanut Butter…the region near where I am is famous for Chicken Riggies (google that one…people travel here just for this dish, and there is an annual contest between restaurants to see who makes the best.) I also appreciate “American” cuisine because I love eating ethnic food, and there are so many different ethnic groups here we can have a little of everything! (Thai, Lebanese, and Mexican are three of my favorites).

When I read @Iluveggers post I realized that not shipping chicks also means there is quite a difference in the number of breeds we have access to. It would be very complicated for me to do a mixed flock with say more than four different breeds of my choice
Absolutely @ManueB . Joel Salatin makes that argument in one of his books (I’ve read so many I can’t remember which). I do not want to buy from a Craigslist seller because of risk of disease, and as I mentioned earlier the local (90 minutes away) hatchery is not as reliable with hatches. Once I have had a chance to experience the personalities of different breeds & how they fare in my climate, I would eventually like to stick with a couple. After retirement I would love to move out of town and breed 3-4 different breeds, but space and time constraints make that impossible right now. Although there have been some terrible experiences with shipped eggs, as I said mine shipped Tue at 11am and were ready for pickup Wed morning before the post office opened. If anything, I wish all postal service workers took the transport of chicks more seriously and went out of their way to get the chicks to their destination safely. Or if there was a way to guarantee overnight shipping through some other means. Would the chicks have to endure a bad ride for 24 hours? Possibly. But there are no guarantees with the treatment of chicks at a breeders either. Improvement of transport is a better option than eliminating sources of potential chicks for people who do not live near a hatchery.

I've been meaning to ask before, why did you order all the furnitures ? Was it for convenience or because you wouldn't have been able to find them in Bristol ?
Along with the butchers, fruit and veg shops the ironmonger has been driven off the highstreet. What we have around here is the DIY superstoresexcept the are not really around here, they're built in out of town retail parks. I don't like them. Everything comes in little plastic packets. 10 washers £2.00. I need 50. It worked out a lot cheaper buying through the net. I found better quality screws on the net as well.

You are right. We would call it a baked custard. And what the Americans call pudding is not what Aussies or the Brits call pudding. 🙄 We are supposed to speak the same language but often don't understand each other. 🤣
Unfortunately it's not just words that are different. The tone and the phrases are different as well. I have to laugh when I get asked by an American whether I'm having difficulty understanding a post due to language difficulties. I think they may see Catalonia in the box and not consider I may not be Catalan.

I've had a fun day, went out to the gun range for the first time and shot some guns for the first time. Very cool.
Can you hit anything?
That Christmas pudding...I have a cousin who's a weirdo ( the one that stayed to long on an oil rig, I mentioned him before).
At one point in his life he had an english girl friend and he brought that traditional british christmas pudding for a christmas family gathering.
Not many of us dared give it a try. From what I remember it wasn't as horrible as it looked, nor as it's fearful recipe 😂.

Pudding and custard tax : he likes hanging out on the woodshed roof but he never remembers how to get down 🙄.

I think fruit cakes and fruit puddings are very British. I guess we didn't get into pastries until recently.
