Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

This is Lima. I'm trying to get a picture of the area above her breast where she has the damaged windpipe. It took a while for any feathers to grow here and now they have they've grown back as white as the feathers (the clean ones anyway) on Henry. I'll keep trying for a better picture.

This hen is dying slowly. She rests next to me when I sit down. At dusk I have to give her a nudge to get her to go to roost. She is one of the first Ex Battery hens to come to the allotments shortly after the first lockdown in the UK I'm told. This would make her around three and a half years old. She eats well enough and makes sure she gets her share of any treats. She still spends a few minutes out foraging with the others but it's apparent that she is slowing down.

She is a hybrid sexlink bred for laying, right? Do you notice differences in the health of the legbars vs this tribe?

Thank you, Shad! So kind & unexpected! I’m definitely not the best writer so I hope my passion for chickens is evident! They are such wonderful creatures that I am fortunate enough to spend time with!

& thank you for the kind words, @Perris !

Of course, some tax lol. Hope a fluffy butt will do!

Not a good writer?
You did an excellent job of pretending to be good then because I liked reading your journey very much indeed :)

Give them a five shad or I will stamp on your toes and get my flexi to peck you :tongue

Yes, she's a Red Sex Link and a production hen.
The RSL seem very healthy in general now and the more recent arrivals so consequently younger are the most active at a bit over two years old.
The Legbars apart from Fret who is a cross are at least six years old and this must have some influence on their behaviour.
The RSL look and act like very healthy hens compared to how they were back in September when I first started making sure they got fed and out of the coop run.
It's very hard to make any relevant comparison because I've only spent around 250 hours with them so far.
It took me at least a year of six to eight hours a day with the tribes in Catalonia to make much of a judgement about health, attitude and behaviour.

I don't have enough freezer space for that.
When egg production is up, we consume about 34 eggs a week between the two of us.

I keep the water glassed egg buckets in the basement. Once a week, I pull out what I'll need for cooking that week using a pasta ladle, which in this household is called an egg ladle. It's also what I use to lower the fresh eggs into the solution. I put them in a glass bowl to carry the upstairs then rinse them off thoroughly with cool water. When they dry, I carton them and put them in the frig.
I'm going to make myself look really silly now. What is water glassed eggs?

Is she moulting or have they been pecked out?
I've seen preening going on but can't be sure if she's being pecked in the coop.
So seems confident outside and fights for any scratch food.

When I used that spray she was upset, it stinks. I don't know what else to do other than moving her in here. But she's so happy outside
