Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

:thumbsup I'm already looking forward to reading it. Are you going to revisit writing? The clock? The shipping container? Secret ballots?

It won't be, though it does depend a lot on what you include under the label 'technology'. It used to mean mechanical things and tools, but these days when people use it they seem to mean computer technologies full stop.

Historically many significantly impactful technologies went unnoticed, and still do. Think infrastructure, for example. People appreciate the impact of a lot of technologies on their lives only when they're gone - in a power cut, or during a train strike or water shortage for example. How they affect their thinking and long-term behaviour is a trickier matter of course - hence your book! :pop
I'm pretty sure it's about information technology.

It's a fun bookclub! We discussed The Ethical Algorithm on Monday, and before that we did All the Ghosts in the Machine, Data Feminism, and Addiction by Design. Last year's book list held similar titles.

Later this year are Alone Together, Why the Future is Workless, How to Destroy Surveillance Capitalism, and Conscientious AI.

Actually not quite true. There are quite a lot of studies on chickens. Just not always designed for exactly what I might be interested in.
Broilers are extensively studied for nutritional deficits and skeletal development for example.
Laying hens are used as a model for ovarian cancer in people so there are a lot of studies there.
Even behavioral studies happen albeit in a rather limited range of circumstances.
Of course most of what we want to know is still unknown - but that is true of people too!
I can add to this. The university in Wageningen (NL) did a lot of research on chickens. Nowadays most reports are in English too. Sometimes the research is done in collaboration with other universities and institutes. Some research on organic chickens is with the Louis Bolk insitute.

They often investigate what can contribute with money. The optimised feed , health care and living conditions for industrial farming.
Some of this information is interesting for backyard hobbyist too.

For example there is one on feather pecking and tips that can help.

If you like to know if there is a report of a study about something you like to read about? Just type WUR e-depot + subject in google search.

Or search in this list of Louis Bolk institute for an interesting topic.

thank you :bow - that's going to keep me busy for a while!

The US gov't is clumsy, stupid, and heavy handed. And that's on their best day.
I'm very sorry , it is a complicated situation to handle. I don't think there is a risk of state intervention, I have never seen it mentioned anywhere regarding Marek, unless there is a special situation in Florida at this time. Still difficult, having given a chick and planning on moving soon😟.

It's about two thirds bigger in floor area not counting the nest boxes. Imo it's fit for 10 chickens. I've been thinking about painting branches and leaves on the inside. Don't worry, my daughter is coming to pick me up later to take me to the local nuthouse.:D
I painted random swirls inside mine, it was boring otherwise 😄
