Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

They're finding Shadrach's palace suitable then 🙂. Are you hoping to get all of them in the coop, or do you think that when you're done with the new run, it will be safe enough for some of them to sleep in ?

Unfortunately we have to delay our run makeover (rainy weather is the happy reason, step mother in hospital the sad one) but I'm kind of hoping some of my chickens will chose to roost in it once it's done. Right now it really feels like I have two different groups in the same house and it makes things a bit hectic waking up and going to bed for them.
This would be a temporary solution before building a new coop.

I'm interested to know how you find it, we plant some linseed and I keep the dry plants for reseeding. I wouldn't have imagined it could be used as straw because it's very stiff!

All so striking! Cookie is quite unique. I must admit I've never seen chickens looking like her or her brother and father. I think Olive eggers are just beginning to develop in France and we have brahmas, but they're not common.

It looks very peaceful and nice in the second and third photo, it must be really pleasant being there when the sun goes down and make quite a contrast going back to Bristol.
Did your company speak English, or did you talk in chicken 🙂?

Lovely ! Probably means they'll be doing it on their own from now on 🙂. I'm hesitant as mine are still roosting huddled high up in a wall nest hole. They're becoming really too big to fit in there but they aren't finding out by themselves that they could use one of the free roost.
I wonder if I should move them during the night or just let them figure it out.
Thank you for the compliments to Cookie and her family.
I hope your step mom is better very soon.

they'll put their big pants on and brave the roosts when they're ready :)

Once again I'll follow the wise advice that no interference is often the best course !
I hated moving them, but I was afraid I would step on them! Literally, piled in the walkway of the human door…these crazy girls! 😂 If it was the back corner, would have left them alone.
Plus, since they all lay different colours/shades, I should be able to tell who's whose if any don't hatch.
This was part of the reason for wanting a mixed flock. Would love to monitor who is laying and who stopped, as I know this can be a sign of health problems (aside from molting & seasonal breaks). 3 dark/speckled layers, 3 blue/green, & 4 cream/light brown/tan. Fingers crossed they are all slightly different in size or shade!

This was my rationale too. I have two ISA’s and two Sultans (my only breeds where there is a duplicate bird) were more tricky to figure out the difference between who was laying and how to spot the difference, but it’s been possible. Ginger lays extremely round eggs, where Goldilocks lays a slightly darker shade of brown. Peanut’s eggs are slightly larger and whiter, where Sophia’s eggs are slightly tinted and often have a little swirl in the shell in the pointy end. I may be a bit particular when it comes to knowing who laid and how many - if I am gone over the weekend and have a neighbor collect eggs, I ask them to take a picture so I can put the tally into the app I use to track their laying. They generally think I’m a bit odd but humor me.

I love to take pictures of eggs! I can't imagine why anyone else wouldn't 🤣
I have at least 2 dozen layers. I can tell almost all of their eggs apart, by shape, color, or size. Exceptions are my brahmas (almost all lay pinkish, one lays a cream egg) and my langshan, who lay light colored eggs with speckles.

What app do you use? I installed Flockstar, and can’t wait to track them there!

I know, right! I arrange them in the cartons so no two colors next to each other are the same…lol. Right now we get eggs from the family farm, and I can’t wait to go out and collect my own!

And they said, they broke the mold! We must be twinsies. 🤣

Thanks, and yes, I hope so :fl I already have at least 4 boys growing up among the June and July hatches!
That's not so bad. I have two roosters, 4 growing out, and 11 bantams in the brooder that are undetermined.
My problem is that I want to keep all the cockerels. They are always so full of personality.
