I'm glad she's a bit better and that you've identified her problem (or one of, at any rate).

She's also needs a feather cut to improve her vision. Why do people breed chickens like this.

The gene for crest is autosomal (not sex-linked), incomplete (half-expressed if only one allele) dominant; offspring get a full crest if homozygote (both parents crested), and a small crest if heterozygote (only 1 parent crested). So once you've got it in the flock, if you let them reproduce naturally, you're very likely to see more of it.

I've never paid more than £20 for a bird, and hatching eggs are usually 2 or 3 each. Even the best breeders sell their cull stock at reasonable prices. I think Shad must be talking about show stock.

This is about 2x the price I usually see here, except for show stock of course. Normal pricing is about 1 euro for hopefully fertilised eggs, 10 for laying hybrids and maybe 20 euro for a common breed hen.

that's very true. My Norfolk Greys took 11 months to come into lay!

you can buy at those sort of prices here too, but I've gone for rare and heritage breeds from proper breeders (trade description officers ought to patrol online chicken sellers, because a lot of what's offered here bears little or no resemblance to breed standards - looks better in the Netherlands from your photo. Half the time I think backyard sellers here really don't know what breed they've got, if indeed it's not a Heinz!)

Not everyone is honourable who sells chickens. The word is spread on the chicken forum here to be careful who you buy from.
Saying: go there during the day and ask for a look around. If you are not permitted to see the housing, dont buy. If the housing is very poor and the chickens don’t look young and healthy. Don’t buy.

I am even more careful I want more/young chickens. That’s one reason why I choose fertilised eggs. I rather not buy hens from a farm or ‘hobbyist’ who have a small enterprise selling chickens. Because I need to quarantine such chickens. There’s always a risk they bring along parasites.
The other reasons are that most of my chickens love to hatch eggs if they get broody. And chicks are too cute to not want them every now and then.

Buying Kraai was an exception. The owner was seeking a new home because they moved to a house with a small garden. I got this 4 year old hen for free. But I did pay 10 euro for 5 kg feed, a second hand water tower, a feeder and a chicken toy.

Tax: Black and Pearl in the second run. Black is broody for the third time this year.

You don’t want to do all the official paperwork either.

In general such small trades are not visible for control. To be sure : send the money with a remark that doesn’t ring a bell. Let the sender wrap it like a breakable present in gift paper (glass) and don’t mention that there are eggs inside.

I hope there wasn't a misunderstanding. When I said I laughed really hard, I meant you seem like you are trying to be not attached to him, but then you appear totally are.(I do think many super sweet cockerels turn to be mean young roosters.)

I'm a slow learner regarding chickens, I feel like most people who have had them for nearly three years like me know a lot more than I do, and are able to handle and care for them better than I am. I'm very attached to our two roosters, but Théo is still showing signs of agression with us, and I know that my partner would rather not keep the two of them, especially if they start to fight. It's his family's place so he'll have the last word if I can't find a way to convince him.

You need to make sure Théo knows you and your partner are the only alpha chickens in the flock. He is 3rd in line
