In case you didn't know, live mealworms don't smell. Nor does their poo - and it makes a good fertilizer. They're cheap as chips to farm. Plus, if you grow them yourself, you know exactly what they've been eating before you feed them to your chickens :p
I’ve got a small mealworm farm. They’re incredibly easy to take care of. I use them for occasional treats so it’s nothing on a large scale, nor do I use them for food waste beyond the occasional carrot end or potato wedge to give them some moisture. I put wheat bran in their bin, which they eat in addition to the veggies I throw in. It’s perfect for what I need right now, very low maintenance, and they can’t escape from shallow plastic bins so long as the sides are smooth and straight. I bought something like 1000 of them two years ago and they’ve reproduced on their own just fine.

Tax: Black vs blue. I watched these two spar for a bit, it was quite entertaining. The black chick (Silkie cross) was the challenger but the blue chick (Auatralorp) had a height advantage, which seemed to settle the dispute. The blue chick is unnamed and will likely stay that way as I won’t be keeping cockerels. The black one was christened Mabel but I’m harboring some suspicions that Mabel may be a cockerel.

It looks like you had a beautiful day!

Dark and rainy all day here, so dreary I was surprised the girls hadn’t thought it dark enough to head to the coop by the time I got home from work. They didn’t go far from the coop but they were still happy to wander about, except for the Brahma who was perfectly content having the feeder to herself. 😂 Sun has been setting around 4:30, so they usually get about 45 minutes to range on winter work days. By January they days will start getting longer again, thank goodness! No pics as it was pretty dark. Not sure if I shared, but my Ameraucana started laying a few days ago! Lovely robin blue egg. ❤️

As someone who lives in the Southern hemisphere, I'm very grateful for the longer days I'm experiencing right now, and I'm not looking forward to my days shortening during your summer.

But, hey, that's what happens on this incredibly rare and unique planet and we just have to deal with it.
