We call it the Goods and Services Tax (GST).Value Added Tax (VAT).
One of the key issues in setting it up was working out what to exclude. In the end, all fresh groceries were excluded from the GST so that families in difficult circumstances wouldn't pay GST on fresh food. But of course, all shoppers benefit.
I'm struggling to recall the details but I think also books are excluded. I have a dim recollection that learning through reading was considered very important.
"Very important" means different things in other countries.
Wrt income tax, I pay it quite happily. We pay as we go and we pay more than we strictly need to, then once a year the government pays us back what we overpaid.
I also find ways to chip in a little extra. My favourite is to buy a Saturday night lottery ticket because the profits from the Saturday night lottery go to the hospitals.
Like everyone, I have my views on how it's spent well and poorly, but in Australia that's very much down to the tyranny of the masses because our voter turnout is so high.
