Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

10C and sunny. They got fed something sometime between Sunday morning and this afternoon.

They weren't desperately hungry when I got there.

Out for a couple of hours.

I think you can see at this resolution. This is Lima's crop and the shape of pellets is visible just below the crop wall.

A distinctive container for a high value treat is a great idea - I'm more likely be consistent that way.

I grew up herding dairy cows and taming youngstock by finding the pivot point between flight and not. Then leaning or raising/lowering a hand a bit (or even just eyes or shoulders depending on how untamed they were) - just enough to press in on the edge of their flight zone if I wanted them to move or ease off it if I wanted to tame them.

Chickens are more reactive than cattle but the concept works. I just need to go slower - actual speed or smaller changes in stance.

I can try both calling them and herding them to see which they respond to better.

They will be coming out these west-facing doors, going between the shed and the garden to the south of the shed, then turning into a run (not built yet) beyond the current garden fence to the east. Then back the same way.

The walls of shed and garden fence actually will it more difficult because I won't be able to get the right angle to turn them. I might have to build some hurdles or something.
Chickens prefer a shed with light. A window can do wonders too if chickens don’t go in by themself at dusk.

Shad asked very nicely. Please take the 'gun' discussion to another thread rather than endanger this thread. This subject has become entirely too politicized. We all have our opinions - some very strong - on this matter.
Apologies
I was/am behind reading and saw the request after posting.
If it makes you feel better you may come over to tape my mouth.

Mama Ini mini and her 5 year younger doughter Janice.

A lovely sunny afternoon the temperature at 12C. It did get a bit chilly when the sun went down. I stayed until dark.
Got bags of birdseed and mixed corn in the feed bin again along with various loafs of bread in various states of decay.

Ella is still not quite as I would wish for. She goes foraging and went quite far with Henry this afternoon. She's just nothing like as energetic as the others and if I sit down it isn't long before she comes and sits beside me. She'll go back into the allotment run if I leave the chair. Maybe it's just how she is.

Absolutely adore my Welsummer @pennyJo1960 !

I hope you love yours as much as I do! She is spicy and independent, but will poke my pants leg to get picked up or get treats. She likes to have her wattles massaged too.

No Ini mini is Dutch, partridge colouring, and much smaller than a Welsummer. Janice is a mix, Dutch x Tournaisis, and a little bigger but looks much the same as her mother.

They don’t like to be picked up.
