Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Because they hurt? The first time I accidentally BARELY brushed my little finger against one as I was walking by (having no idea it was a plant I wanted to avoid) my finger was tingly for almost 24 hours.

The alpacas don't eat it, the chickens don't eat it, the goats the people had who gave us the alpacas didn't eat it. I don't know if what we have is the same as what you have. When not just coming up they have a squarish woody stem. I did look up urtica dioica and it looks like the same thing.
well yes, they do :p (the clue's in the name) but caterpillers and other tiddlies eat them, and the sting is neutralized by heat (cooking).

Footie and nettle tax: Amadeo coming down out of the holm oak

this is our common nettle, which has the attributes I described

Most of my contact with our nettles is from cutting them down around the water tanks for the horses. My sister noticed

that the horses ignored the cut nettles for about 10 to 15 minutes, then would eat them. I never actually tried cutting some to see if they won't sting after that amount of time. I might try cutting some and offering them to my chickens and see what they think. Ok I said horses and Shad said specifically no horses on this thread so I do have tax !
