Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Also of great interest to me is the Nestera Recycled Plastic Coop competition. It's had some interesting responses. Is this the begining of the end for the look what hubby built for me oversized impracticle coops that BYC have put a lot of effort into promoting?

A very smart move by Nestera in my opinion to sponser and hold such a competition here and expand into the USA, a move I will be supportive of.
There's a chance here for those of us who have already gone over to the dark side and have portable recycled plastic coops (yes I know the portable bit with my coop is a bit of an exaggeration :p) to promote the idea and with that, the benefits of multi coop chicken keeping.
Yep I know there will be a lot of despondent American men who will now have to find other ways to demonstrate their marital worth and spend more time indoors with the missus.:D

Most of all though, will we see an outbreak of how I modified my plastic coop articles such as I am about to present.:D

Perhaps the next air quality disaster will be from people burning their wooden coops.:p
The "Look What I-I-I (not hubby) Built" coop will be here FOREVER! NOTHING is as predator-resistant as wood and metal. No plastic can withstand the efforts of a determined fox or dog. I love my converted playhouse coop. It was fun - and very satisfying - to do and is completely renewable, as needed. It will also be around a lot longer than any plastic mess - unless you count the time plastic spends not decaying in the landfill, someday.
That said, I did put my name in the hat for the Nestera coop. I mean, hey, it sure would make a nice tractor, or even a broody coop. "Free" is always a bonus!

Oh - and the tarp over the extension (pic below) has since been replaced with a pair of used stall mats - courtesy of a barn update. My coop is always a work-in-progress!

The general theme of less reliance on commercial enterprises and living off grid runs through most of these discussions.

Lovely looking place. When can I move in? I could manage a rent of say £800.00 per month.

I visited this place a couple of weeks ago looking for starter plants.

What is the price for the house to fell in love with?

Btw, I love to watch ‘Dreamhouse in the country’ They translated the title into Dutch so Im not sure if the title is right.

P.s. It’s Escape to the country.

Some of My great grandfathers left Ireland and Sweden because there was no land for them to subsistence farm being the youngest sons. I imagine it's about the same nowadays.

I used to bring reusable bags until COVID. The stores didn't want the germmy bags handled by cashier's.
Actually I had to watch the baggers because they would put the items in plastic bags and then into the reusable bags :barnie
In Europe you pack your own shoppings. Except for some clothes and luxury shops.
I use bike bags , and several bags like cotton bags and foldable (tiny)acrylic /nylon bags.

they have some very interesting stuff. Did you get yours there?
No. My onions and potatoes cam from a nursery. Most of the rest has been given to me by other plot holders; mainly the couple from Belarous who have the best plot on the allotments by far. They're also the friendliest people there. They've always grown stuff, in Russia, Belarous and now the UK. Not surprisingly they have a rather different perspective on the current problems. The women had family in the Donbas region of Russia.

Warm with intermittent sunshine. a bit oppressive I thought and so did the chickens. They ate and dissapeared to a recently watered plot and settled down in amoungst the plants. I didn't see hide nor hair of them for over an hour. Once a couple of degrees got knocked off the temperature they arrived on my plot and had a dig around and ate a few more berry buds.

Thanks for the link.
Oof. Expensive. The perch looks like something I need at my desk because they come inside. I think I will just have my brother make one and save some money. Shad has rubbed off on me. I now let them inside. And the net someone here suggested works really well for keeping small bugs but not the junebugs out. I have watched the chickens, and they shove their head in the crack, and then shove the curtain open. I will have to film it to share it one day.
yes, they are pricey. Chickens are so funny. They have great personalities.

Doesn't anyone have shoppping bags any more? Apart from my rucksack I have a couple of canvas bags I take shopping.
I think paying for plastic bags was considered in NJ but they went straight to an outright ban.

NY has banned plastic bags as well. You can pay 5 cents for a paper one, or bring your own reusable. I keep a bag of 10 folded inside in my trunk. I like them better anyway…they don’t break with heavy items!

Plastic bags are not banned in South Carolina, nor do we pay extra for them, but I have a collection of reusable shopping bags that we use. We stopped using plastic bags about 10 years ago and I still have a small stash that I use when cleaning the litterboxes. We try not to be wasteful.
