Thank you! I've also done the thing where I poured out a jar of beetles in front of the chickens, only to watch them instantly take flight and return to the fruit trees

When I catch Japanese Beetles, I have about an inch of water in the jar. I dump them into a pan with some water in it too. JBs don't fly much.

Oh... were you talking about JBs? Or another beetle?

I put them in the freezer. It slows them down until they warm up

Poultry were saying there was something they didn't like along the west field fence. I seen the fence and weeds wiggling. There was a mink trying to pull what was left of a 9 wk pullet through. It ran as soon as it seen me.
I put the carcass in a plastic grocery bag, I carry for such things, and put it in a box trap near where it was. I had a hen missing at lock up in the closest coop. Guess I know what happened to her.

Mink are very bad news. They were about the only wildlife one was allowed to kill on sight in Catalonia.

Every time I see Henry I'm all the more anxious to get my start of Light Sussex. He just looks so royal and needs a throne to roost on.

Light Sussex are an attractive breed. Henry is I'm told a good example of the breed if that sort of thing is important to people. The problem with Henry is he doesn't stay white for long. His daughter Matilda who was the lead hen here seemed much better at looking clean.
The black and white Dorkings are another lovely looking breed imo for large chickens, by British standards at least. Both were popular for meat and eggs not that long ago. Fewer people in the UK keep chickens for meat it seems than in America.

I thought you had hives on the allotment?

We do, but I've seen very little bee activity this summer. I'm taking no chances.

Well done. My Uncle used to farm them. They would chew through the cage wire to get at the one in the next cage. My Uncles son lost a finger tip from a mink bite.
We got the black American mink as an invasive species. Not a fan.
