every year. Said once he gets it all bucked we have close to year worth of wood

Took inventory of my Dark Cornish. Haven't been sure if it was 11 or 12 left after some losses. It's 3 cockerels and 9 pullets for 3 pens of 4. That should be a start for a scattering of the gene pool. The question is will my deciding which rooster goes with which 3 pullets will put a monkey wrench in the happiness in the house or not. If I pair them up now before the pullets start choosing just maybe I can get by with it you think?

Yet another reality that can be hard to convince people of. Further, the reasons a hen picks a particular rooster are complicated from what I've seen.

From what I have observed with ours, so far, our girls gravitate to the cockerel / rooster that makes them feel safe and is most attentive.

Attentiveness is high on the list of what I've seen attracts hens.

I may have to convince my Dark Cornish that they are going to have an arranged marriage or else I'll ship them off to the auction for another batch of chicks. I'll have to keep each pen to where the others can't see each other until they get settled into a relationship of their own.

Word gets around.

They put signs out.. "Free food and water, prime suckers.." We get so much pleasure from watching them. In the spring, we have tons of Blue Birds and American Robins (not as plump and cute as your robins, but always a favourite of mine.), we keep seed out for them until it gets good and buggy out, so we know they have plenty of food. We are a breeding ground for wild bunnies and geese too.

We just let ours choose for themselves.. but we have all Buff Orpingtons, so we are not trying anything special with breeding. All 3 cockerels are fine young lads.

In our neck of the forest, you're a pariah if you don't help you neighbor move his truck stuck in the mud or clear a tree from the road. The social rule is "next time, that could be me." Helping a neighbor pretty much guarantees you will be helped when it's your turn to need it.

We are in the south, USA, everyone around here is really nice. I am anti-social with most other humans, but in a pinch, I am there to help and vice-versa. When my son wrecked my car (the woods threw a deer at him.), everyone that passed by stopped to make sure he was ok and offer help.

It's a very good thing that we don't speak "Mink," 'cause what that one's spouting off at you would definitely NOT be fit to repeat!

While hens straight from the battery may look dreadfull, maybe even dying, they are very unlikely to have the diseases that most other options risk.

If you put it to them like this (and just this bit ) I'm sure they'd understand why you want 'fresh' rescue hens
