Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I hope @no fly zone is doing OK with skeksis gone and moving. 🙁

It's been a month since Skeksis died. I have never cried so much in my life. I've been pretty depressed, to the point my wife suggested I seek professional help. Which I am not going to do because I feel psychology is a sham, plus even if it was legit, no one outside of a community like BYC understands, and I will not be judged by someone from the Skeksis was "just a chicken" crowd. I have owned some 250+ animals in my life, and while I have cared for all of them, none were like Skeksis. I have never bonded with a living creature like that. From the moment I took her out of the incubator and she imprinted on me, it was a love that was pure and good. I will always miss her.

I gave the flock to a pair of vegetarians in FL, and now I am up in the suburban hells of NJ doomed to a chickenless existence, which is not helping with the depression.

I do thank everyone for their condolences. I no longer have chickens to take pics and video of, but I will still follow this thread, I just won't be contributing much.

I thought something like this had happened.:hugs I'm still missing Lima. Even though compared to many of the chickens I've cared for I knew her a relatively short time she embodied all the hopes I had for the recovery of Battery Hens from their mistreatment and abuse. Henry misses her too. I can tell. We talk about her while we sit in the coop extension waiting for the rain to stop.

The last pic ever taken of her & I.

She was a lovely little lady and I don’t think any of us will ever forget her.
I can only speak for myself, but I would be very happy seeing pictures of her any time.

Welcome to Nee Jersey. Hopefully you find some ways to be happy here.
Let me know how I can help.
I will try sending you a PM.

I have no idea why parents do not teach respect around animals, if only for the child's own safety! When you think about the size difference between a rooster/dog etc and a toddler, it would be like a pony, or a ram to an adult! You damn well shouldn't be messing about with either as a full grown adult without good awareness that children simply aren't equipped with.

The very few times my daughter got a smack when she was small (it's technically not legal here... don't get me started) was when she was mean to the dog we had at the time. She got bit by that dog and I told her it served her right. She also got scratched by the cats. She does not disrespect animals anymore!
It is baffling, the basic things seem to have been abandoned by people these days. (I feel like the grumpy old lady yelling "Damned kids! Get off my lawn!" but old-fashioned respect and human decency needs to make a comeback.)

I have no idea why parents do not teach respect around animals, …
I do understand this if you don’t respect animals and think human life is worth much more than animal life.

But I do not understand why many people don’t respect animals in general while they do love their own pets.
And I don’t understand that these pet loving people eat so much meat. As if they don’t realise that meat is a product of animal kill.

People , especially those who say to respect pets and animal life, should realise that many animals in the meat industry have a life of animal abuse.

Strangely (to me) meat eaters /bbq-fans are often the same people who cry and mourn over the loss their dog if it needs to be euthanised getting old and cripple.

How come that they are so attached to their own pets and have no respect for animals that are kept for the grocery store?

Strange how cats and some other pets are forgiven but roosters are not in many cases.
Some people aren't that forgiving of other animals either, looking at the number of abandoned pets. :-( Most people have grown up with dogs and cats, so they know what to expect, and they maybe think a chicken is just a bigger parakeet and completely get caught off-guard by reality.

Part of the problem may be the number of people that see all the cutesy chicken pics on FB and decide that they want chickens too, but they just don't understand that this takes work. There are a lot of people that just don't want to have to put any effort into anything, and the minute they realize that it is much more involved than throwing a little food around, they lose interest.

I have been pointing a lot of people to your article, Understanding Your Rooster. I have come to the conclusion that chickens, while thought of as "pets", are actually wild animals, and no amount of nurture can over come the deep seeded genetic instinct. If the nature is respected, you can co-exist with very little problem, but people need to understand. I was guilty of this myself, but I actually put in the effort to learn more.
