Please be careful adding an extra layer on the roosts. Were I live we have red mites that love such layers to crawl in between to hide during daylight and to lay their eggs.

*Touchwood, we haven't seen any parasites, but I am a little OCD. When the weather cools down, here (around October), I want to make some structural changes/additions, and look at Shou sugi ban as a treatment for the wood.

I have my fingers crossed for a successful hatching at the allotment. I agree the easiest way to add birds is hatching them with a broody. It's been the only way I've added to my flock, and while it's not a hard rule for me, it is definitely my preference.

It's so nice seeing how lovely the coop and run is now at the allotment. I was along for the early journey and the improvements are impressive. You should be proud!

I prefer hatching eggs for my broodies too, the most easy and safe way to keep enough egg-layers in my flock.
Having several casualties 1.5 -2 years ago and 3 senior hens who only lay in spring and summer made me want new chicks this year.

Last summer I added a solo hen from elsewhere who I trusted to be healthy. But integrating was not an easy proces. This hen (Kraai) turned out to be a bossy hen and she doesn’t behave when human food is on the table. But she sure has an interesting character and a big plus, she’s not a i-want-to -be-broody type.

Thank you so much, I'm very glad you liked it! No, they are not kept together. Before the bird on the first picture had any females, we had a couple of instances where he escaped and fought with the other big male (second pic). Thankfully they were free ranging so we didn't have any losses. He (the first male) has a lot of aseel in him, if not pure, so compatability with other males is out of the question. The last cockerel is still too young, and very small, so he will never even be with the large hens, let alone the males. Sorry, taxes. He's the full brother of the first male
