Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Wind and rain on and off all day.
About half an hour out on the allotment run in between the rainy periods.

They can swim for short distances. If you have young chicks that might be a problem. I have a creek and so far the only problem has been the mink coming up the creek from the forest preserve. Water attracts all predators.
Thank you for the answer, it really helped me work through this puzzle. I think we are going to run the fencing across just to be safe. This is just the only area that does not get soaked in the mid-day sun and is semi flat.

The problem is, when we moved here, we never planned on any of this animal keeping, so the house is closer to the pond than the road, and there is a dirty great steel building in an awkward position, but it does provide shade and a wind break when we have had severe weather, it withstood a small-ish tornado, with almost no damage.

The open air turkey roost frames are going to be moved before we add the roof, wire them in and wrap the roost boards with rubber mat material.

a couple of the goats.. there are 5 babies and 2 more girls ready to deliver any day now. The chickens seem to love watching their shenanigans during the day.

I've had two fall in a stone washing tub the ducks used. One I didn't find in time and she died the other survived once I had dried her out.
We are going to block them from the pond, my heart couldn't take it. Just when I think they are too smart to do it, they go and do something completely insane. Tonight, all the girls bunched into one corner of the run, climbing on top of each other, trying to get closer to us, when we were over chatting across the fence with the neighbors and meeting this year's baby goats. 🙄 They can't be trusted with water.
