I hope so to. She's getting on a bit for a Cream Crested Legbar. They lay too many eggs.

Do you have any idea what may be wrong? I have 2 crested cream legbars and one is not well either. Often lays shell less eggs or stays in the egg box a long time but doesn't lay. She sits on the perch a lot during the day and when they have access to our whole garden she rarely goes ar from the run. She's only 3.5yo.

I'm not particularly good at the sickness problems. I'm pleased to write that apart from injuries and the more obvious problems like coccidiosis and parasites I haven't had to deal with much in the way of sicknesses. Some hens just don't eat enough of the calcium left out for them here. Mow is one such. If she gets lots of ranging time she manages to get what she needs from forage. It has only been recently that I've seen her pick up oysershell from what I leave out. Carbon has a few problems, moulting hits her very hard and she's an early high production hen like all CCLs.

Thank you... yes I leave oyster shell out but my hens won't eat it... it stays full in the tub. It's annoying as I think they need it really. I have a copper maran that has lots of issues with eggs, shell less and v soft shell all the time. She seems well in herself.

Is she egg bound? She could have shell less egg stuck. When was her last egg? What are her symptoms?

I don't know what you feed them now but have you considered a high calcium layer feed? At least with that, if they eat at all, they get the calcium.
CCLs are an odd breed. They lay big eggs for their bodyweight and are daily layers in season.

I wonder if there is a different way to get the calcium they need, a different way? Maybe through adding a calcium supplement to their food?

My girls are always eating the oyster shell, usually supervised by the boys, that luckily seem to know they don't need it.

Mine consider oyster shell flakes a treat, but what they really love is their own eggshells. I rinse the insides, let the shells dry completely, then crumble them into tiny pieces.

We do that too. The Egg Thief blitzes them through the food processor. ;-)
