she looks to be in fine condition - this could go on a while yet!

I am beginning to worry about when she moults. My others are in various stages of feather loss and regrowth and will all have fine new plumage by the time it gets really cold. No sign Tassels is losing feathers - which makes sense if she is programmed to hatch - but if she gets naked when it is really cold, that would not be great.

I understand. I was relieved when Maria gave up, for the same reason. Tassels may go for a light moult remember; they don't all have hard moults there every year do they?

On the chickens eating funga theme, this is what one of those in the garden (a birch bolete, I think) looked like on the 9th

This morning, I found the cap, partially eaten, about 12 ft away from the stalk, wedged into a gap between an old tree trunk and the lawn

This shows the cap brought back to its stem; the tree stump findspot can be seen in the distance behind Hensol's tail

I conclude that is not collateral damage from general foraging.

Millie the Pekin is a serial broody, 2 1/2 yrs old and has never had a big moult. She tends to have a mini moult after coming out of broodiness, has a pause, lays 12 - 14 eggs and promptly goes broody again. Breaking her broodiness just shortens the cycle

But very sweet & only grumbles when I lift her off the nest to eat etc.

That is very helpful. Your description of Millie sounds just like Tassels. Does she ever give up being broody on her own? I am beginning to think Tasseks just likes being broody!

Yes, usually after about 3 weeks, then 2ish weeks of not laying & having a mini moult followed by 2ish weeks of laying a clutch (which the mean human takes away daily as we don’t have room for more chooks ) then back to being broody & repeat! Sometimes a shorter sit but a determined soul

Up to 6 a day does no harm if you don’t drink alcohol. The combination is bad for your liver. Ask the pharmacist if you like to ease your pain without further damage to your health.

Ibuprofen and diclofenac (acetylsalicilacid) is bad for the stomach/gut and some people develop an allergy. Its never good to take these for long period.

I only use paracetamol. I started with 4x2 , Now I take 4-6 a day. I still have pain because the fracture has a little dislocation.

I take Tylenol for the pain.

Away from home most of the day. Free range from 17.00 h . Chickens went strait to the ‘lawn’ (grass and herbs) to nibble some greenery.

I used three broodies this year. I don't know if it was the breeds or personality but they all were okay with me checking eggs and chicks. I got a few pecks that didn't hurt, some verbal complaints. When I picked up a chick and it was cheeping I would get some ankle pecks, but again, not painful.

Zacchaeus was raised by adult hens and minds his manners. They finally accepted his advances, but he had been tidbitting them for weeks before it paid off!

No broodies, just the pullets. Not laying yet.

And Silas, their hatch mate. They're all 4 1/2 months old.

I've always found it fascinating watching a young rooster or mature cockerel courting hens. The quicker learners work out that they had better have something to show for an I've found food call with all the posturing; the slower often try with nothing to show for the fuss and the hens don't bother chcecking his next call. Cillin had it sorted from day one because at that time I was taking care of him as a lone cockerel. His mother died before they returned to the tribe coop and his mother's tribe wouldn't accept him.
He was able to show the hens in tribe one that he could get me to give him food which he would then offer to the hens. Okay, I cheated and helped a bit. The hens didn't have a rooster at that time.
It took Rip a couple of months of dodging his father while trying to entice a couple of junior hens away from his father. He got there in the end.
