Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I have asked at the local vet. They told me they don't prescribe or carry out any procedure without seeing the patient. This in many case means one appointment to introduce the patient and another for treatment in many cases. £75.00 for the first appointment. If I wanted an appointment that could fit me in on Friday of next week.

It works out cheaper and a lot quicker if one knows what medication to give and where to get it.
Would that mean Henry would get to ride the bus? Perhaps he would have the same effect as the rottweiler from earlier this week 😉

It seems that the right vet would not only be able to complete the analysis/treatment in one trip, but also be able to determine correct treatment and prescribe accordingly right away.

Or to do your own fecal smears for the chickens.

In the Netherlands they offer a chicken poop and worm research for € 17,95. The webpage has an auto translate button.
They test for several kind of worms: Roundworm, hairworm, tapeworm, coccidiosis. Do read the link for more info:

The cost of shipping add onto the price of course. But nevertheless this is very affordable. Contact/questions through WhatsApp is possible.

If you have (can use) a microscope 🔬 you can do an inspection / float test yourself 🧐 if you know what you should look for.
In the Netherlands people can do an online course for about €100,-

Ugh, I applaud their thoroughness, but fecal analysis isn't a "procedure."

Also, does the vet actually know chickens, or would you be causing Henry immense stress simply for a vet's expensive shoulder shrug?

Can you call other vets? When I said "sweet talk," I wasn't kidding. Back in the day, I had to call multiple vet offices before finding a front-desk person who bragged, "we can test anyone's poop, even human." (Not kidding on that either, ha). Cost me $28 a few years ago.

The one avian emergency room in our region was $250 just to be seen, and an hour away. Plus, the main vet didn't know what a Cream Legbar was 🧐 Apparently all her research was on broilers and she doesn't actually like chickens enough to know popular backyard breeds, ugh.

Do you have similar labs in England? Elsewhere?

There's a fascinating thread about this somewhere on BYC. Royal, do you remember which member runs that?
No. I never saw that thread. Probably a search could dig it up.
Centuries (OK, decades) ago I was taught to do fecal float tests. It isn’t that hard if you can access a microscope.
I confess though that I don’t do my own and have probably forgotten how to do it.
I have a vet do a flock test (pooled poop sample) now and then. I believe there are mail-in services available too.
