Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I attended a course at Ft. Bliss years ago. That land out there doesn't look all that great for growing stuff. Maybe I am quite wrong though.
The land down in the Lower Valley is good, but a lot of it has since been ruined, and needs reconditioning. El Paso used to be a farming city as far as I know, but now they're ruining it further with cookie cutter houses all over the remaining farmland.

You must be delighted.
I do have to point out though, given the amount of tax avoidance posting you've done, two pictures hardly make a dent in your current tax liability.:p
I know!! 😂 But they’re so dang fast!

I’m a bit under the weather with whatever my kids and grandkids have. Tomorrow, if it’s above freezing 🤞🏻, I’ll get back out there with garden fork and camera!

So… when you’re picking up a 7 week old pullet that first saw you less than nine hours ago, and they squawk in terror, is there any spot that you can give them skritches to help them calm down? (Like under a cat’s chin and between its ears.) She did seem to calm down at bit after a little face rubbing.

Note: no comb or wattles to speak of yet.

She’s easier to catch than the others when she’s eating. This is the Orp, of course. 🐷

If you have the choice, maybe better to give treats and not pick them up 🤷‍♀️

When they know you better, a light tapping on their beak (like you're a friend cleaning food off their beak), a bum-bum fluffing, or a light crop rub may be appreciated. Depends on the bird, but most of ours love those things.

Congratulations on your new friends!!! That's so exciting.

I've been taming my new chicks using chest/crop rubs. They'll be getting treats as soon as they're old enough. :)

If anyone's interested, I've written on article on hedges for forage and cover, here
https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/hedges-for-forage-and-cover.79874/

I'm not sure how widespread they are outside Britain, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be planted anywhere, choosing suitable species for the location of course.
I don't know why I didn't think of this, before! We have been talking about fencing off the property from the road and just letting the chickens have at it, hedges will make it much better! (I have not told the Egg Thief, yet.lol)
