I found it amusing that they are studying if animals have consciousness.

I know people who insist fish don't feel pain. I believe pain is a signal to not do something, so anything that moves should have a pain response.
When the local waters were deemed too polluted to eat the fish I quit fishing. I felt catch and release was just torchering fish.

If anyone's interested, I've written on article on hedges for forage and cover, here
https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/hedges-for-forage-and-cover.79874/

I'm not sure how widespread they are outside Britain, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be planted anywhere, choosing suitable species for the location of course.
Hedgerows are making a comeback in the US, especially with regenerative farmers and others trying to work with nature rather than against it. (That’s an awkward way of phrasing it and sounds accusatory, but it’s all my brain can come up with at the moment.)

The federal government created the Soil Conservation Service in the 1930s to address the devastating loss of topsoil during the Dust Bowl years, and they were big on persuading farmers to use them

My family wants to do the regenerative stuff. If there's ground cover for the chooks to eat, I will be happier.
