Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

As a curious aside...

I found Martha under the roost when I went to the coop after dark to move some of the flock to their new coop. I removed her, then took away Silas and the Dominiques, and Esther, using a pet carrier.

Zacchaeus watched me from the roost.

After I placed the moved chickens on the roost in their new coop Zacchaeus started crowing, repeatedly, which he never does at night.

His world has changed, I believe he was responding.

Both he and Silas were crowing this morning, as usual.
I am learning the different types of rooster crows. (on top of the individual voices.) There is, of course, the good morning, time to get going crow, and an alarm crow, when they are trying to tell me something is off, and there is the conversational competition crow. I imagine the loss of sweet Martha, was expressed is some part by a series of mournful, good bye crows.

Tax that needs to be paid.

LOL I can't wait! I hate having to play grown up instead of hanging out with them all day, so it will be worth it. :)
My chickens are grown up and they don't have jobs...

...unless that one time In Albis jumped up, stole a piece of turkey off my sandwich, ran around the yard with it in her mouth, and got chased by 5 other chickens and a human counts as a job (the turkey piece was the kind you roll up and put on a sandwich. Unrolled it was bigger than her head by a large margin).

And the loss of half of his flock, too.
:(

It may help that they can see and hear each other, still.

Today it was a mellow banana. 🍌
I miss having chickens in the house. They were exceptionally well behaved.
I only had to throw a couple of roosters out once when they kicked off in the house. They looked very shocked when I scooped them up and tossed them out the door. They never fought in the house again. I enjoyed having Cillin as a house guest after his son Treacle threw him out of the tribe coop. He must have lived with me for a few weeks until I made him his own coop.
Broodies in the house was usually calm and interesting to watch.
