Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I would be inclined not to stroke a hen that crouched for me.
None have in the past but that I'm sure is because there have always been cockerels and roosters. The field hens haven't so far but I could invisage it happening. They are starting to listen to me and that may not be a good thing.:p
Definitely less common to have a hen crouch for a human with roosters around. Of all the hens here, I believe only Peck has ever started to crouch at me. The few times it's happened, she stopped mid-crouch with a look like, "Oops, forgot myself for a moment," and ran off.

I would not have engaged either way. I'm no rooster. I'm a short-beaked, noodle-winged, featherless chicken.

True. As soon as a cockerel started to mate, no hen crouched for me anymore. And hens who start moulting or stopped laying don’t crouch either. On top of that there most hens tend to flight for me or other human beings if we come close.

The only ones that crouch atm are Black and Kraai. I do give them a few soft pats on the back if they ask for it. Can’t see any harm in that. For me it’s obvious they know Im not a rooster.

Btw did I ever tell that Kraai is bi-sexual. She behave like a mating rooster does towards Janice sometimes.

Last evening in the run, just a few minutes before roost time, probably wondering if I’m bringing more treats.

My Robin seems to be the same. She has the largest comb of the chickens, spurs (since she was a few weeks old), and mounts Button often. She doesn't seem to lay anymore, even though she's only 2 years old. If she is laying, she's in and out of the nest pronto; I haven't seen her on the nest since last summer, before the slow down in laying in preparation for molting.

She's a Bielefelder (autosexing breed) and definitely female. I did see her laying last summer.

You can just read the label. The strength of the app is the alternatives it cmes up with. The app itself is rather alarmist.
Overall I think it's a good app. Thanks for telling us about it.

I m checking processed things I usually buy.
It doesn't like anything that is a gluten substitute and recommends things that have gluten. Breads , wraps and such. Good reminder to use those GF things sparingly.
I was surprised it thought Aldi can salmon and organic tortilla chips were excellent and good. I figured the salt would set it off, it did say salt was a little high.

Reason to not have peacocks :barnie :smack

He can go back home anytime now . Wish I could catch him. Hopefully he will get used to me enough to corner, blindfold and take him home 😂

I’ve been reading British mysteries for over fifty years and have suffered greatly through UK modernization. (I suppose I should write “modernisation.”) First decimalization/-isation just as I had FINALLY figured out pounds/ shillings/ pence, and let’s not even talk about guineas and other wacko units, and then metric system (wish we would), and yet they still go to the pub for a pint and people weigh 12 stones WTF, and then, OMG, they changed the names of all the counties and their associated police departments! (And one police force for the entirety of Scotland?!)

Y’all need to settle down over there. You’re wearing me out.
Hilarious! :gig:lau
