Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Here in NJ, the gov't is stealing a family's 175 acre farm, claiming eminent domain. So they can build a bunch of apartment buildings on it. Rather disgusting.šŸ¤‘
Look up Groton, CT. They took people's land and houses to build a casino. :he

the theory is fine if one has fixed coops, but not mobile ones, and if the chickens are used to be rounded up (which mine are not).
Not to you or anyone to follow up. Just a bit of my chicken history. 11 years ago, when I started to keep bantam chickens.

We had a light coop with a small run for max 4 small bantams we moved around. Bc the run was too small I made a run with mash panels, wire and tie wraps and attached it to the small roof covered run. The panel-run was made to move around separately and connect after the move.

The run space was still rather small and the lawn started to look weird with 4 fanatic bantam scratchers. Next spring we decided to make a permanent setup with a safer and larger run.

My first flock, when Ini mini was a pullet. :

PS: I use both I and we, bc my husbands always helps with the heavy work and the larger projects. But it’s me who is in ā€˜chickens-charge’ most of the time.

Free ranging all day was never an option bc of the predator load here and my own well being. My husband and I decided to let them free range only when at least one of us is at home. Im pretty sure we would have had many more casualties if we had them free range every day from dawn till dusk.

Two and a half hours today. Warm at 25C and hot in direct sunlight.
The unthinkable has happened, Tull crouched for me this afternoon when I tapped her arse with a length of cane to get her to move.

I'm mortified. I'm seriously considering getting a cockerel from my friend now.:lau

People.
A teenage girl got on the bus this evening. The driver refused her claim that she was under 16 years old and should only pay the child's fare. The bus driver didn't believe the girl and to be fair it's virtually impossible for me to judge accurately the age of any teenager and bus drivers have to make a judgement if no evidence can be produced. Add to this, I've seen quite a few teenagers try to get half fare by lying about their age who I knew were over 16. The teenager refused to get off the bus and went and sat on the upper deck.
The procedure for the drivers in such situations is to turn off the engine and call the bus company. In possibly violent situations they activate an alarm and the bus company call the police.

It's 11.15pm. Quite a few buses had been cancelled and this bus was at maximum legal capacity which I believe is every seat taken and 12 standing. I'm tired and I just wanted to get home. I assume most people on the bus wanted the same. I've been stuck on a bus in a similar situation before and we sat the for twenty minutes before the situation was resolved.

I went up to the top deck where the teenage girl was sitting looking very upset tinged with some embarrassment and asked if she had the money for the remaining part of the fare. She said she hadn't, so I offered to pay it for her explaining that I really didn't want to sit on a bus in central Bristol for half an hour and go through the forthcoming drama.

I gave her a five pound note and explained that she needed to come downstairs with me and pay the driver herself, give me the change and we could all continue on our journey. She was very polite, thanked me, said I was very kind and gave me what one gets as change on most buses in Bristol center, which is a credit note. Not much good to me given I have a bus pass.:he:lau

When I turned around to go back to my seat perhaps half a dozen people looked directly at me; most were glued to their phones. Nobody said a word.
But once I had sat down and the bus was moving again an elderly women lent across the isle and said "thanks love, I'm dying for a wee.":lau

No good deed goes unpunished, springs to mind.:p

Fret swapped nest at some point today after Tull and Mow had each lain an egg in the other nest box. She's only got one egg in her nest. I took Fret out of the nest box with two eggs in and carried her to the food trays to eat with the others and then went back and removed the two eggs leaving the one in Frets original nest. Wnet Fret returned to the coop after eating, bathing and fretting around my chair, she went back to her original nest.

Good for you for ransoming an entire bus load of people! ā¤ļø

It's interesting because I may not have done the right thing. If the teenage girl was over 16 then the bus driver was in the right. If the girl was under 16 then she was in the right. I could have been party to a fraudulent claim.
I just wanted to get home.

Lots to be said for getting home.
