Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Kalmar (one of the SFH chicks, nearly 8 weeks old) is poorly. S/he spent a lot of time yesterday sitting down (but so did a lot of the flock as it was really hot by local standards, and I thought no more about it); this morning s/he could barely stumble out of the coop. Brought in for some mealworms, which were eaten with gusto; Maria gate-crashed for the same, which was helpful as it clearly reassured the little one that it's OK inside the house. M was booted out once she'd finished, and K is currently sitting quietly on a towel in a washing up bowl in the corner of the utility room. Occurs to me I need to put a bit of white kitchen roll under his/her bum for a poop inspection later. 💨

Yep some places have that set up as well with Hatcheries. But the bulk of them are just used in dog food. The aforementioned chicken meal.

@Skyeknight yeah, here it's layer 'extras' that are used for food.

Nothing goes to waste, and I don't think it's cruel. They are used.
Factory farming is cruel, no doubt about that!
The farmers need to be cruel to be competitive /make money. If factory farmers give their animals a descent life with enough space and a more natural environment they go bankrupt bc there are always others that won’t respect animal life. And there are not enough rules snd regulations to protect the animals.
The animals in factory farming are used and abused! Killing babies is cruel too.

Random, but there are so many TN/NC peeps here: I-40 is closed through the Smokies AGAIN. Flooding and mudslides at the usual place.

I think everyone else already knew this, but I don’t watch TV, so it was only when I saw traffic back to crawling up 240/26 through West Asheville that I realized. Here we go again.

At least I know the back roads.
Extreme weather is about everywhere these days. More heavy floods, more widespread unstoppable fires, disappearing islands, collapsing mountains…..

And in the meanwhile governments don’t do a thing or not enough against climate change. They let the industry and civilians use even more fossil fuels.
People buying more airco’s who use plain electricity , instead of solar energy doesn’t help.

I wonder when people in charge start to realise that things need to change rapidly and the factory’s and people on our planet actually need to start to stop using fossil fuels right now. Bc most people are not going to change by themselves if they are not forced to.

Maybe give water with electrolytes in case she/he got dehydrated. ?

S/he's had mealworms, the regular feed (which is well hydrated anyway), bread and milk, and has a bowl of plain water in reach from sitting position, and of those only the mealworms and the feed have been consumed vigorously, so I don't think dehydration or electrolyte imbalance was the issue. Maybe s/he just didn't get enough to eat if foraging was a challenge and it was a struggle to hold place at the food bowls recently.

Four and a half hours yesterday. Too warm to be doing much so I didn't.
Fret, Tull and Sylph not at all comfortable with 30C. I must get the worst of those stones out from under the coop. The ground grows stones.

When national governments openly pander to fossil fuel corporations, nothing will improve.

In Connecticut (New England region of US) where I used to live I could dig out all the stones from the garden, and the next Spring there would be more.

Yep, they reproduce.
;)

The public here has been sewing the government and large oil company with sort of success. But they still keep on doing what is very wrong for the environment. 😢🤬

Black acting strange.
