Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Im no moderator, but as a follower of this thread I didn’t understand what it was you were replying to.

Checking , made it clear you replied/quoted to a 2 year old post. Unfortunately @TropicalChickies isn’t an active member anymore. Of course we all forgive you. Especially bc you are a relative new member and besides I suppose we all make unintended forum-mistakes. At least I do. Even after 10 years (and my English is still a bit weird too, even after trying to improve myself for 10 years)
Thank you and my apologies!

She might get frost bite.
I did worry about that but the way I do it I think there isn’t a big risk.
She has a strip of 2x4 that her feet are on so her toes are not touching the ice, and I pack the ice on top of her feathers, not touching her bald brooding spot directly.
Also she is able to move out of the way of the ice if she chooses.
I find she is so hot that she melts the ice very rapidly!

she is exceptionally pretty @L-plate chicken mum

So is the verdict on a freezer block as broody breaker 'fail'?
Thank you, I think she’s very pretty too.
Well as the main reason for the freezer block was to cool her down I would say that worked. However a couple of days at the beginning of her sit didn’t put her off and she’s still broody so it didn’t work as a broody breaker. Afraid I wimped out after 2 days once the temperature dropped

It's pretty much all I have until tomorrow, when the dog crate gets delivered!

She has gone out into the yard several times, scratching and doing chicken things, but it doesn't last long. At least the other two started staying sort of near her. They've been regarding her the way someone might whose new college roommate turned out to be the Linda Blair character (Regan) from The Exorcist.
And that is why this picture is called "the broody monster.":D

We need to set up a zoom meeting or something for them to explain this to my lot.

Feels like they've realised the solstice has passed and they need to take advantage of every hour of daylight now before days get much shorter.
It was the wind and rain combined that seemed to be what made them throw in the towel early. That and they seem to have an uncanny ability in knowing that things are not going to improve in the near future.

Have you tried dunking the legs once a week for 3 weeks in surgical spirit, as per Roberts, Diseases of free range poultry? Since during moult the scales are shed like the feathers, and the mites are thus more exposed, the best time of year to try this is approaching. Not sure how it may or may not interact with the German vegetable oil though.
I haven't yet and given I've advised a number of posters to do exactly this I probably should.
The simple truth is it's easier to painting the stuff La Fleche suggested on with very soft brush that is is to get a chicken to stand in a bowl of surgical spirit. I've done it a few times in the past having read Victoria Roberts. It works. I want to see if the stuff La Fleche suggested works. It's very easy to apply high up the leg and between the toes so coverage is thorough.

I don’t know what surgical spirit consists of (although I’ve seen the term), but I would guess that trying to get a chicken to stand in a bowl of it, or anything, would result in ME being coated with surgical spirit.
