Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So weird people all over the world seem to use the word Dutch for all kind of things that aren’t Dutch at all.

Tax, a neighbours bantam Sussex with the chicks she hatched from bought eggs.

The Pennsylvania Dutch are descendants of German immigrants. The "Dutch" part comes from "Deutsch", meaning German.

The Dutch were colonizing and living in North American long before substantial numbers of Germans arrived, and so Dutch was a handy word. Never underestimate the ability of American English to rearrange non-English names and terms!

French fries aren't French!
:gig

"Let's go Dutch" is an expression probably derived from "Dutch Treat", which means everyone pays for their own food, there's no treat involved.

And "Indian Giver" means someone who takes back a gift.

The creaky bagpipes are so happy to be able to stretch their legs.
It has been in the high 90s here, it is miserable for the chickens. We have fans going, but I am getting 2 mini-splits one for each coop. The turkeys actually seem to be dealing with it better, they will stand in their play pools or the pond to cool down, whereas the chickens won't. 😭 Luckily, this is an anomaly, we normally do not stay this hot for so long, and it is supposed to start dropping down tomorrow, with gradual cooling the rest of the week.

I’m very sorry you had to go through that :hugs . Glad to read that you made it work with Andre, and he turned into this handsome gentleman we all have loved seeing.

It’s very hard to euthanise and/or cull birds you never thought would have to leave your property. I’m no stranger to culling, but Big Red is my baby, the only bird I’ll ever call that, and I’m incredibly sad to see him go. At the same time, I feel like I’m also to blame in how he turned now, considering how I chose to raise him, following the advice of some gamefowl keepers (not on BYC).

The last video of Andre is very touching. I love how calm he is about letting the pullets peck and preen him:love. That is another thing that’s really sad to see with Big Red. It seems like he thinks everything is transactional. Every time he calls for food, he expects to mate. With all three boys being on edge, the girls have not enjoyed a peaceful dust bath in quite some time. Yup, both Big Red and Elrond will try to mate the hens while they are dust bathing. Like Shad said, one would expect a three year old to have more composure.

Thank you for your post, HiEverybirdy. It’s very nice to read about other peoples experiences, whether they ended successfully, or not. Sorry for beautiful CogBurn, but you did everything you could:hugs
Thank you for the kind words. Sending strength your way as you weather the emotions of this.

I also felt 100% to blame for Cogburn's behavior. He had the great misfortune of being raised in a box by a human with no idea what she was doing. I learned so much but would've done anything to turn back time so he didn't have to be a teaching aid.

Thank you very much :hugs .

It’s human nature to make mistake. The hardest thing is when the animals under our care have to deal with the consequences.

CogBurn was absolutely beautiful! That second photo especially, the light has fallen perfectly on his face, one of, if not the, prettiest chicken photos I have ever seen
