Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

"Is this how you comfort your soul bc the time to say goodbye to Fret is near?
Of course I hope for a miracle too.
:hugs
"

Well, in a way I suppose. I listen to a lot of music. Sometimes a track just seems appropriate,
Here's the bad news.
I've been watching chickens die for close to 25 years. I've seen hundreds die, some culled at end of maximum productivity, others for meat, the sick and the old and the injured.
Some I have grieved for more than others much as one might for the people one makes contact with in ones life. I have to be honest and it probably means I have some kind of psychological problem or other, I've grieved far longer and far harder for chickens I have known than I have for any human and that includes my mother and father.
There's more, one might have thought after so many deaths one would become hardened off to them. I don't seem to have got there. It hasn't got any easier.

I'm so sorry. You're doing the right thing

what page are you up to now @Labsandchickens8 ? It takes some steel to start reading a thread this big from the beginning, and more perseverance to keep working through it.

Did you intend to quote all those posts, or just the last one?
It's taken me approximately 5 weeks, but I have read every post from the beginning to here. Every chicken that died made me sad, especially I think Henry and Skeksis. I was mad when C gave away Matilda, hatefully I think. Also - the neglect of the sweary geeae- ridiculous!
I noticed some people dropped off and I wonder about them. I learned Cs real name - I would never have guessed Caroline because it's a pretty name and she doesn't always act nicely. I was guessing Claudine or Constantina or something.
Most of all, I've bookmarked a lot of information and learned so much. Thank you all!

C for Cruella deVil!

Four hours today.
Tull died sometime this morning. I found her dead next to Fret in the coop extension. She had a heart attack. No mistaking the signs, neck far out and hackles slightly raised. Poor Tull. Poor all of them.
Fret is no better but she had managed to leave the coop and perch on the board that separates the coop and the coop extension, something I had sever doubts about when I left her last night. I put Fret on the roost bar in the coop tonight and she wobbled a bit but settled.
If everybody was dying with even vaguely similar symptoms I could believe something contagious was being picked up and was spreading through the group, but they're not.
Grave digging tomorrow again. I should at least have some help for that as my friend who lives close by has offered to help. my eldest's husband who would and has helped in the past has a broken wrist and the treasurer who would also help has hurt his back.
Sylph is laying again a few days after the shell less egg she laid and the eggs are normal.

It's complete nonsense but I can't help thinking if Henry was alive none of this would be happening.

Thank you Labsand, for bringing us back to what this thread is about. I hope Shadrachs agrees on this ^^ and >>.

This thread still is about Shad’s chickens and the work on the allotment. The original rescue chickens are no longer around but its still about chickens, housing.health (problems), field management and Shads wish to get a more rescues from the farming industry.

Other peoples questions and experiences on flocks or tribes are welcome too. All the debates about other stuff still has to be paid for with astonishing, awkward or blurry photography. Whatever tou are capable off. 🥃

Not my chicken&chicks-tax:

Shad, did you ever try to approach a chicken-farm to rescue a a couple of chickens directly from the farming industry before the are send to the slaughterhouse?

Btw, in general the chickens in organic factory farming are stronger and have better genes than the chickens without a label (at least in the NL). Maybe they will give you more joy than the extremely poor creatures from ultra-commercial factory farming.
