Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

You still have so much green around! Much of our yard looks as if the girls had learned how to work flamethrowers.
It was very green at the end of November, beginning of January. The Egg Thief said, "What do you expect when it never stops raining.." LOL

Navy is done with her kids, she slept in the tall coop last night and left the little sprouts in here.

Just a day or two shy of 8 weeks. I'm very happy with that and she will be allowed to raise future broods.
How long can a hen mother her chicks?

My Ini mini slept with her Amrocks in the same coop until a week ago. Not really mothering anymore.
She finally decided after 14.5 months to sleep with her old nieces (Black Pearl) and Katrientje in the extension again.

The playhouse is occupied by the 2 Amrocks, Janice and Kraai. I suspect that ini mini doesn’t like Kraai and prefers to avoid her at roost time.

Navy also laid an egg this morning, tiny little thing. Maybe that's why she returned to the tall coop to sleep? That's where the tall nestboxes are, and it was her coop of choice before she went broody.
I was surprised the chicks didn't roost up there with her and the rest, actually. There was enough space.

She's all reddened up and everything!

Ini mini is such a wonderful bird, I love reading about her antics. :)

Maybe the fact that Ini mini never laid an egg after her last hatch was the reason she kept mothering the Amrocks for so long. I can imagine it had something to do with it.

I have a turkey hen that raises chicks, she keeps the pullets with her until she starts brooding again in the spring. She isn't as close to her poults
