Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Just in case you missed it, BYC will be offline tomorrow for a software update. Hopefully it won't be more than a few hours.

Here you go.

The guy who makes them is on BYC user name Al Gerhart. I am not tagging him because it is probably better that you PM him. He was very helpful to me in getting it set up. You have to train the chickens to use it and mine learned at different rates. I could not be happier with them - though Al does warn you that you need to be willing to tinker a bit - this is not a big box store product. Not quite home made but close. It is very solidly built and I know several folk who have them and have been happy with them but sometimes a bit of tinkering is required.
I have two.
Am I the only one worried about this becoming a chicken guillotine? LOL I actually read that they added a soft-close feature to prevent that, but I had a mental image of one of the girls tucked in, then slipping off the lever.

I think I would like to order one to try, and see how this will fit their needs. Obviously, this won't be used for the fermented feed. ;-)

Actually one of the reasons I got this one is that it isn’t a guillotine style (which many treadle feeders are). That worried me too.
In this one, if a chicken were to fall off the treadle the door would push its head out of the feeder.
It is constructed a bit like a cat flap if that makes sense.
The soft close add is actually to reduce the noise which some chickens and owners didn’t like when it closes.
They have used it with soft foods (for dogs) and I don’t see why you couldn’t use it for fermented feeds but it would need filling every day and might be a pain to clean. With dry food it stores the food and refills itself which obviously wouldn’t work with fermented feed.

Tax: you can see here the binder clip I used to stop it closing fully for the sake of the chicks. Of course that also means it is temporarily not rat proof.
