Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

weird, mine don't seem that keen on woodlice. I have plenty because of all the cut tree stumps I leave kicking around - but the chickens just don't go for them.
some of mine like them, others ignore them; most of mine don't eat earthworms either, while a few do. Idiosyncrasies of taste aren't just a human phenomenon it appears

most of mine don't eat earthworms either,
My last flock loooooved earthworms. I would take a shovel out the run and dig a hole and they would go nuts digging up worms. My current flock doesnt have a run and won’t eat an earthworm if I serve it to them on a silver platter. I suspect it has something to do with their access to such diverse food choices whereas my last flock rarely got out to range and that was in a suburban backyard.

Indeed so it seems. Most (but not all) of mine love earthworms.

How are your youngsters and Tassels getting on RC?
Well one of them appears to be an accidental cockerel so I am getting my mind around that.
When a hatchery says sexed to 90% confidence, there is the 10%.
He is a rather good looking fella I must say, and he is a total mother’s boy always right by Tassels’ side. They are now 7 weeks old and she shows no sign of relaxing her control over them.

One girl (I think) is growing up to be quite a beauty. She is also feisty and an accomplished pilot!

Tassels is an endlessly patient but quite controlling mother. She is beginning to moult so their cardboard box is full of her feathers.

Him being a mama's boy is a good thing. She's showing him what the GOOD stuff is, so he will do better when tidbitting later. He's running over and paying CLOSE attention.

My boys were the first to get to the roosters when tidbitting, too. And I can't find a pic of that. The multicolored Whiskey clone was good at that, usually going to either Cheetah or Whiskey.

Jax was frequently the first to PITA when she'd call the littles.

I think I heard him imitating her tidbitting sound. Not sure he had anything to share and he may have just been lonesome.

Wait until you SEE him crow. Classic rooster crowing posture.... sounds like a damaged dog squeaky toy: "Errr." And no volume. The part after the air has been squeezed out, and the toy is trying to suck air back in...
