It's about to become that way here too. I love autumn for that reason, where a lot of people complain about summer ending. I think that parts of the PNW are quite similar to parts of the UK in terms of climate. We get mild, wet winters and dry summers where I am too (though I think our summers are probably a bit hotter)
A dry UK autumn has got to be my favorite season. Unfortunately here in Bristol they tend to be wet and windy. I'm enjoying it while it's dry.:D

some of mine like them, others ignore them; most of mine don't eat earthworms either, while a few do. Idiosyncrasies of taste aren't just a human phenomenon it appears

Indeed. Mine have never gone for the roly polies. The old guard loved earth worms, but all the birds after the first Tsouloufati flock don’t regard them as a food option.

The first time I saw them denying a juicy earthworm I thought they were ill!

I've only had chickens love earthworms, which is all the better because most species are invasive here

Is that Oregon or Washington?

In the Netherlands, where I live the climate is similar too. The temps are a only a little higher and we have less rain than West-England on average.

Our neighbour has a kind of pear that is hard and not for straight away consumption. The pears fall in our garden too.
Yesterday I cooked 1.5 kilo with a little sugar, wine and cinnamon. Made 3 pots for keeping and some to eat with yoghurt. I intend to make the next batch over the weekend with orange juice.

A line of pavers where used to be hwc. Because the hwc in the ground rusted I thought it would be safer if the chickens cant scratch here.

From 2 runs (9 and 6 m2) with a small opening, it went to one 15m2 run.

While I was moving some soil around , I encountered several earthworms and black beetles. The chickens were free ranging and showed no interest to my surprise. They like eartworms but are not crazy for them. They prefer the other bugs if they have a choice.

Yes, it's in Oregon, though I shouldn't divulge more than that since it isn't my property (my in laws). We get almost 130cm of rainfall each year, almost none of which occurs in the summer.
I'd like to visit the Netherlands sometime, I've always found pictures of Amsterdam quite beautiful. I'd also like to try herring :P
