I was with you on visiting the Netherlands (I have, in the Eindhoven/ Schijndel area, many years ago, and loved it) and Amsterdam, which I haven’t, but you lost me with the herring.

My enduring memory of the Netherlands is looking up in awe at the train arrivals/ departures board in Utrecht. There were trains to everywhere I'd ever heard of in Europe - and beyond! - accessible just by getting on a train at one platform or another. To someone used to island living, it was heaven!

Here we have 87.5 cm on average.
In spring not so much.

Ansterdam is overcrowded with tourists nowadays. I don't like going there anymore, unless I want to visit an exhibition or do something special.
Other , smaller cities are much nices to go to , to enjoy the scenery, smaller museums, restaurants, terraces and such. I do not recommend driving and parking in cities. In general we have a good infrastructure for public transport in cities. To see more of the country its best to rent a car.

Canal in Utrecht. One of the best cities to visit and enjoy imho.

PS I do like herring. But many people dont. And after eating it your breath really stinks.

This is way beyond a normal Dutch breakfast. Sounds more like a good desert.

Most people eat sandwiches (mostly brown bread) for breakfast. Some with margarine/butter and hagelslag, (chocolate sprinkles) , others like it with cheese or jams . Or we eat musli with yoghurt. Some like a croissant or buns for breakfast. A boiled egg in the weekend and orange juice.

I’d wish. There are good trains going to Berlin, (Prague?) , Paris, Basel and even Vienna. But beyond is ‘a hard nut to crack’. Unfortunately it’s cheaper and way faster to fly to many cities in Europe.

Utrecht. One of the best cities to visit and enjoy imho.

Remembering that lovely city, I'm pleased to see this unusual museum (of automatic street organs and other musical instruments) still exists - it was a blast!
