Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I'm pleased to report that Paprika has returned with the kids to a coop tonight, after roosting out last night  and causing me some anxiety in doing so... I was very happy to hear them all cheeping and clucking outside the back door while I was preparing their breakfast :). I have no idea where they spent the night - except that they were in none of the places I looked for them :th.

In other news, I saw Glais getting a ticking off from Cadle this afternoon. How are your preparations coming along @Shadrach ?

It's not windows 10. It's 11. And it's not directly on your lock screen. It's click the thing on your lock screen and when you enter the pass code, it auto opens Bing, Chrome (or whichever terrible one your forced to use )with a new tab for info you don't care about, but as a search with a list of links you can click into...
That's odd. I've never had that happen. Is it like a list of news and things like that?

No. You click the like for the pic. It pops the thing for the pass code and when the desktop comes up, it auto-opens the internet with a new tab for whatever the pic is like you did a search for it. I might like the pic, but I don't need/want to know more about the pic right now.

I was able to shut off the same "feature" for the desktop pics, just not the lock screen.

I've never had that happen. I've told it that I liked a photo too and it hasn't done that to me. Albeit that was years ago though.

I'm probably at least two weeks behind our original date.
I need to be reasonably fit to take in Glais. I'll need to be at the field in the mornings as well as the evenings. I'm not fit for that currently. I'm flat out just doing a couple of hours in the evening. I must write that I am at least beginning to feel human now the course of antibiotics and steroids is finished.
I could just chuck him in with Mow and Sylph one evening and see how they all got on the next evening. I would rather not for every-bodies sake. I've done it before and the next night the cockerel wouldn't even go in the coop.
It took me a few days to catch him. I would like to avoid that if possible.

The new coop needs to be off the ground and there is work to do for that.
The old rotting spare coop needs to come out and the ground underneath needs digging over because the rats use the underneath as cover. They don't live there thankfully.

In essence, I want to give Mow, Sylph and Glais the best options I can for making a go of it.

Maybe you are the brains I need to pick about my upcoming rooster integration…🤔

I am 🤞 getting a rooster tomorrow. He is a sleeping in trees kind of guy. Which is what I want. I have one hen who currently does just that. She lays in the coop and pops down to eat mash once a day (I think) but I also have ten…or so…other hens who sleep in the coop but free range all day. If I want to keep Boy in the trees how best to integrate him without coop training him? I am inclined to just cut him loose as soon as I get him home because surely he wouldn’t leave an entire harem of ladies unattended. What are your thoughts on this? I have a barn I could accustom him to but that seems like a step in the wrong direction.

This is really random, but how are you bringing Glais home? I have some delightful mental images of the two of you on a train, or better still, on an inter-city bus…

Thanks for the update; it's good to see that your health is improving. There is no rush here; it may be better for all concerned if Glais gets a little 1:1 training in interpersonal relations from the hens here first

I will deliver Glais to the field when Shad is ready for him MoC; amusing as taking a cockerel on a British bus might be...

How old is he? If he's been living outside did he have a harem in the trees with him or living in a coop?

With free rangers and dawn till dusk rangers with plenty of room then I usually let them choose where and with who they live.
A couple of times I've wanted a cockerel out of the tree they roosted in and in a coop. I used the maternity units for this, one of which I could place on a frame half a metre off the ground.
I used to wait for the cockerel to go to roost, get him out of the tree and put him in the spare coop. I may have been lucky but on both occasions they went to roost in the coop after three or four tree extractions.

Predation is a risk and one needs to consider the weather; wet and cold isn't good for them.

A further possible problem is he gets the hens to roost with him in the tree:D

My view is always if they've got enough room, a suitable environment and some options they are quite capable of sorting themselves out and that is as good as it gets in my opinion.
I would let him roost where he wants and have another coop, It doesn't need to be anything fancy, ready just in case.

Perris is going to tuck Glais under their arm and cycle from Gower. You know how much Perris likes the old school stuff.
