Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If you or a pet are sprayed, the smell lasts for more than two weeks if you clean it properly. If you don't act fast enough, its said that it can last months or even years.
Wow. Thank for explanation. I didn’t know their scent stinks for such a long time.

Not in the strictest sense (unless they have rabies) but getting sprayed is no joke. I hadn't realized that there weren't skunks in Europe, so let me try to explain.

Skunks rarely, if ever, run away from a threat. They're not afraid, because of how effective their natural defense is.

Potential predators are entirely incapacitated. It's so overpowering that your eyes water, you can barely manage a choking breath, suddenly there are no other scents in the world. And that isn't even if you get sprayed in the face. If your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, everyone at your place of work will be able to tell the next day, simply because you were in the same building as said dog. If you see a road killed skunk, you roll up your windows and shut off the AC/heater, because a whiff through the vents can linger for several minutes. You can tell if a skunk visited your chicken coop last night based purely on scent. If you or a pet are sprayed, the smell lasts for more than two weeks if you clean it properly. If you don't act fast enough, its said that it can last months or even years.

So it'll ruin your day for sure
fact! We had a dog get sprayed, multiple baths, baking soda rub downs, it was horrible. Luckily, the skunk has moved on too.

It's no joke  . That's why it's important to respect their space. I quite like skunks, they're pretty cute. My heart just skips a beat when one is close.

Perhaps crows vary from rejoicings to reactions 🤷‍♀️
Our boys crow when I go out to just check on them. Each one, with their different voices. Spud likes to run and jump up on the shade hut nearest the gate and crow and talk to me. He really likes being told that he is the handsomest boy ever.

They have a different crow when the first boy spots the hawk sounds the alarm, everyone gets their girls under cover, then do a short crow, as if to say, "safe", then it goes quiet until the threat passes. They are fascinating as individuals and a community. I can't wait to retire and spend more time outside, just observing.

Love those first crows.

You could knock me over with a feather when Merle started: he was 3 weeks old, waking us up from the brooder! Hard to believe a tiny little thing could make that noise.

Walk down memory lane tax: Merle in his salad days, including the season he lived peacefully as a bachelor with Andre before their falling out. He's always been a looker.
