Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If someone had told me when I started the thread it would go on for four years and get two million views I would have laughed.
Four years!? That went by fast.

Personal note that this is the longest I've ever stayed connected and engaged with an online community. Social media is part of my job, so I don't usually enjoy it in my free time, but the love of chickens is an incredible bonding force.

They did a nice job, but Sylph looks overstimulated from the day. Little does she know how much more exciting change is to come.

Yup. I don't even have chickens any more. I have to live vicariously through the rest of you.

Hello @Shadrach.

The time came and went. I've lost Fabio. Earlier this year. It was heartbreaking.

This young man is the best I currently have out of 9 sexually mature cockerels, all but one of which have been successfully rehomed to be flock roosters.

He was riding herd on the rapists.
He is the only one of the boys I've ever seen tid-bitting the hens/pullets.
He is the only one I've seen standing guard.
He has started showing more of an interest in the whole egg laying business.
The 2 older ermine pullets chose him and roost with him at night.
He has an incredible crow. His voice even sounds like Fabio's, but this boy has added a note into the crow that Fab didn't have.

I've named him Doc, after the character Doc Holiday from Tombstone in honor of one of my favorite actors, Val Kilmer. Wyatt is my sole dominant white Ameraucana cockerel who has not yet reached sexual maturity and is still coming along in the younger batch that was hatched out this year. I hope they get along as well as Wyatt and Doc did in real life.

I am sorry about the loss of Fabio, but excited to see how your new young lads step up and mature.

Oh Tonya :hugs:hugsThat's a terrible loss.
I must confess I don't remember many of the roosters names that I've read about on BYC, but I will always remember Fabio and how patient you were with him. Most other keepers would have cooked him. Yet, you showed that with gritted teeth and time, plus the occasional bruise I suspect, a mean one can come good given the chance.

If you've done it once you can do it again and I'm sure you'll get Doc into shape and come to love him as you did Fabio.

I hope you keep contributing. Apart from the lovely pictures your knowledge and observations of chicken behaviour are in my view excellent.

Well, lucky me, Fabio's insecurity is not one of Doc's traits. He has never shown the slightest inkling of wanting to have a go at me.

The way I described him in the Cafe is, he's an awful lot like Fabio but without the assholery.
