The chickens might disagree but I'd honestly like to experience that.

Closest I think I've come - which isn't very close, I know - is a few years ago when we got snowed in for five days (snow is unusual here despite the latitude) and I walked the two miles to the shop with my eyes closed most of the way because it was snowing heavily at 40-50mph. That was great.

You're welcome to visit. Honestly, that sort of temp doesn't last all that long, usually no more than about a week....and the temp yo-yos all winter long....sometimes as high as 60⁰F (15⁰C)...and dropping back down to 20s (-1.6 to -6.6C) the same night. We get similar temp swings during the summer (lows upper 40s/low 50s aka 10⁰C) too.

I'm going to blow the whole winter discussion up now.

How cold? -40⁰. That's NEGATIVE 40 on either scale.

Wet or dry? Mostly dry, but at those temps, wind chill is a worse problem.

I’m in the mountains of Western North Carolina, at about 2200’ (670 m.) altitude. My city is in sort of a bowl-shaped depression, surrounded by much higher mountains - one reason we were so hammered by flooding by Helene a year ago, pouring down off the heights. As a result, we live in a rain shadow, because the surrounding mountains catch most of the rain coming from any direction (so again, the flooding.) My county is the driest in NC, and Lake Toxaway, 45 miles to the SW, is the wettest spot in NC.

When we first moved here 12 years ago, we reliably had 3-4 snows per winter, generally one heavy enough to nope out of driving into work. We rarely have snow any more, but we’re starting to get winter rains. 35° (1-2°) and rain, ugh. Lows are generally in the mid-upper 20’s (-4 to -2°) during the nighttime, occasionally down into the teens, and 30’s-40’s during the days, except when we have a freak warm spell and I have to go out and yell at the forsythia to hold up, it’s not spring.

I guess it’s like the Facebook status: it’s complicated.

I like the cold, so long as I'm prepared for it, and I find the wind invigorating. I'd like to know what those temperatures feel like and what it's like to live in those conditions.

The coldest that I remember, from Vermont was -36, it was not pleasant, but it was survivable, the wind made uncomfortable. I like the cold, I just not that cold.

He doesn't bite And he knows other NG (and other) breeders all over the country, so you could get in touch just to get contact details for others who are near(er) you. I think putting prospective buyers and breeders in touch with one another is one of the principal jobs of club secretaries. They form these clubs to try to preserve the breed, so they're very happy to hear from anyone with an interest in them, however slight.

Never done it but if you can cut of 15 seconds of your video its seems very easy to upload it as a short.

Please ask your partner or a neighbour to film this next winter if you have a spell of warm weather again. And of course you need to post it as a short on youtube.

I'm so silly. It's only just now that I realised that wysiwyg stands for what you see is what you get. I thought it was some Welsh word I didn't understand

As a non native speaker, some of the vocabulary used here takes me a second to understand. I particularly struggle with abbreviations. Excellent example being “fwiw”. For the longest time, I thought it was some scientific paper thing. The revelation usually comes late at night, when my mind is tired enough to try and guess what they could mean. To the outside world, a very loud “OH” can be heard .

It’s a little comforting to know that sometimes you native speakers don’t get it immediately, albeit much faster

Winters in the Netherlands are more wet than cold. Bc of climate change , longer periods with freezing cold days (below 0°C) become rare. It seems that ice skating at the lakes, canals and floodplains are becoming an exceptional event.

No mountains where I live, so the 30 -40 meter high hills here got names with mountain in it. The Grebbeberg is one of them. It is also a well known memorial of the start of WWII (1940).

My 3 oldest Dutch like to watch from a platform too. Black, Pearl and Ini mini in the run behind the chicken wire. Watching what is happening in our garden from an old table in the run.
