I’m not a native speaker too and struggle with the use of lots of abbreviations too. Google translate is no help with those either. As a non native speaker, some of the vocabulary used here takes me a second to understand. I particularly struggle with abbreviations. Excellent example being “fwiw”. For the longest time, I thought it was some scientific paper thing. The revelation usually comes late at night, when my mind is tired enough to try and guess what they could mean. To the outside world, a very loud “OH” can be heard.
It’s a little comforting to know that sometimes you native speakers don’t get it immediately, albeit much faster![]()

The very common abbreviations that are used a lot on whatsapp and socials like fwiw, fyi, lol, and wtf are not a problem.
The chicken related abbreviations often are. And some abbreviations for relatives too. If people who use them would start accompanied with the explanation, the first time they use it in their post, it would be perfect.
lol (laugh out loud) ,
BO (buff Orpington)
SML (scaly leg mites)
SIL (son in law) etc.
I never understood why people use capitals to type abbreviations either.

That reminds us of several things:After reading -40 degrees, I know it’s my time to stop weighing in on any weather discussions.
Winters here are a joke to most of you, but I love it.

Photo taken during Christmas time, almost two years ago.
The chickens seem to be perfectly adapted for this sort of weather, the Tsouloufates especially (which is not that surprising). They always go through a phase in September when we get the first autumn rain, and they look so sad
Native speakers also get confused, especially when one gets used jumping from one subject area into another...I had the same problem with a lot of the abbreviated breed names!
I can’t complain too much about that, however, as I found myself doing the same.
Now that’s an excellent case in point. I thought SIL was for sister in law (although I guess it can be used for both)!
Exactly!!!I can't have a conversation that does not involve the chickens, turkeys or my dogs and I know most people are really not interested, so I spend a lot of time smiling an nodding. View attachment 4229777
I never mastered any language aside from a working knowledge of my native English (US American), but I've studied French and German in school, and have a smattering (small amount) of other languages...enough to appreciate and admire those of you not just reading but CONVERSING (talking/writing/discussing) on an English language forum. I commend you! You're great! As a non native speaker, some of the vocabulary used here takes me a second to understand. I particularly struggle with abbreviations. Excellent example being “fwiw”. Over here, abbreviations are capitalized to indicate that it is an abbreviation, although in the world of on-line communications, all caps is used as shouting, so that isn't necessarily a good indicator anymore. Typically you would use the period/full stop, A.C.V. or S.N.A.F.U to be more accurate, but, again, the on-line world has eliminated some of the normal use of punctuation.I never understood why people use capitals to type abbreviations either.
SNAFU is a favourite as well as FUBAR (F'd Up Beyond All Recognition). They seem to apply to most things on a normal day around here.Let's not go down the rabbit hole of Military acronyms , even those that have become commonly used "words" like SNAFU (Situation Normal, All F'd Up).
