Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

My chickens have seen our feral cats their entire lives, have never been attacked by them. But my roosters still make concerned noises when a cat runs past the coops.
Our hens make a very light concerned noise if they see a neighbour cat. And a more concerned noise if they see a strange cat. (No roosters here).

An hour and a half today. We did manage about an hour on the field before the rain set in again. Rain all day on and off.
I bought some heavily reduced in price pork loin steaks (sell by date that day) to make a chickpea and pork dish. This is what I took to the chickens.
The container weighs 20g so that's 15g each providing 3g of complete protein each. I think Glais hoovered up rather more than his share.

In the coop extension. Glais was letting off steam in the extended run.

Quiet orderly roosting again. Judging from the droppings under Sylph's position on the roost bar, she didn't eat much yesterday before roosting.

You and Perris are putting me to shame. My lot had a free tuna and sweetcorn sandwich from the community fridge, some "weeds" I rescued from the barrow someone was about to chuck on the compost heap and a bit of rat (courtesy of the cat again - my own rat butchering skills apparently aren't up to scratch).

Mine would do the same. One of the strange mean feral cats wandered in the yard and the chickens got mad.

So, after acquiring a clear heavy-duty 8x20 tarp, I persuaded my 6’ tall baby daughter to help put it up in anticipation of the Arctic cold front with high winds coming through tonight. It’s wrapped around one end of the run, the end with the Nestera and the open roosts.

The chickens, being chickens, were deeply suspicious (one inside, obviously trapped by the giant clear plastic monster, with the other four staring in from outside):

But they put themselves to bed at the usual time, having apparently decided that they wouldn’t be eaten in their sleep.

I cleaned out the freezer, found chicken legs and thighs from 3-4 years ago. Into the slow cooker they went, with water almost to cover. Twelve hours on low temperature later I removed the chicken, slid out the bones, and broke up the meat. It tasted okay, but my flocks appreciated my offer of a small handful, each coop. The chicken broth was poured over dry cat food, for the ferals. The only thing put in the trash was the bones.

Are you going to reveal your thoughts on this at some point?
Probably not, at least not in the near future.
I've got three articles getting close to completion that are soaking up my time and my mental capacity.:D
I want to get those finished before I start a war.:p
