Those little feets!!!

I know! Didn't get a photo but one of them did the same thing this morning, ran into her rather than under her, but with enough momentum that they lost their balance for a second and there was just a sideways pair of feet sticking out of the fluff

She's so fluffy they can pretty much tunnel through it, even right across her back, without being seen.

Got to the field at one thirty to find the pop door still shut.T he string had broken. It's hard to see how it could have been chewed, no signs of a mouth being on it and no way I can see of getting at it. Anyway, it was broken and there was a pile of plastic on the ramp from the rat chewing the door. Having had two breakages in the past, neither the fault of the unit. there wasn't enough string left to connect it all up.I took the Nestera one apart and used the string from that. It's all very fiddly and dropping one of those tiny screws is inadvisable to say the least.
Anyway, it was all working when I left.

Do you remember I told about the cheap new pop door I bought previously this year? It has no strings to chew on.

The one I bought won't do for your resilient dark female rat for sure, but I know there are aluminium doors too with the same mechanism. Chickenguard has new auto-pop doors too with this same mechanism. Not sure if these doors are made of metal. €105

I don’t know if that will hold for your brown lady with big teeth. Maybe its worth a try?

The youngest of this year's 3 pullets, Hay, is looking resplendent this morning, and I think she may start laying soon.

It will be interesting to see what colour egg she lays, given the beard and muffs indicate some Araucana in the mix...

I've been looking at them. They don't have a great reputation for reliability. I've been very pleased the the old style chicken guard I bought. I'm going to try out replacing the string with a guitar wire. If the wire can be turned around a machine head on a guitar it might just work.
