Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I can't help but feel sad for the cat, who didn't ask to be born into an environment where its natural instincts are destructive. If people were more responsible with how they cared for their pets, then neither the birds nor the cats would need to suffer.
Are you serious? Or maybe I just don’t understand your response.

Why is a cat of more value than another predator?
Why is a backyard chicken of more value than another chicken, you can buy in the supermarket next month?

People are really weird creatures when it comes to pets, food and everything in between IMHO.

I think there might be a misunderstanding, I can go into a little more detail. I do not think that the cat is more important than any other predator. If anything, wildlife is far more valuable from the ecological perspective.

It's here that I must confess that I've been unable to read the article; the website kicks me out after only a few seconds. All I can gather from context is that a cat was dropped by a predatory bird(?) and crashed through someone's windscreen. I don't know if it was a pet cat or a stray, so I'll address both scenarios:

I do feel sorry for stray cats. Just as the birds the cats kill aren't adapted to their hunting style, the cats themselves are not adapted to the local environment and predators. The only reasons they're so prolific are because of their fast reproduction and because humans feed and shelter them. This leads to unnatural population density, which decimates wildlife and spreads disease. Stray cats live pretty miserable lives that often meet violent ends.

Pet cats have it better in some ways, they never have to worry about food or shelter, or learn how to avoid predators. They get to be fat and content. But this becomes a problem for them when their owners let them outside, since they lack the knowledge and physical fitness that wild animals have. I feel bad when Mittens gets taken away by a hawk or coyote for the same reason I feel sad when a confined flock of silkies gets decimated by a raccoon: in both instances a domestic animal is facing something that it's woefully unprepared to survive. It's unfair, and something that never would have happened without human intervention.

We all know that the outdoor cat problem is detrimental the wildlife, but it's detrimental to the cats as well. It isn't the their fault that they're in this situation.

I definitely owe tax on this  I'll try to take some chicken pictures tomorrow

Bald Eagle dropped the cat through car window. Fortunately landed in empty passage seat. Big bloody mess, driver ok. Didn't say if pet or stray.

It froze last night. Today just felt damp and cold despite the temperature being a couple of degrees above yesterday's.
They came out for a forage stayed out for about an hour but didn't look comfortable. Glais was keen to stay out but Mow and Sylph just wanted out of the wind.
Sylph can't walk a metre without a feather falling out. She looked rather miserable today while Mow seemed to be coping with her moult better.
I stayed out with Glais when I could. He did keep going back to the coop extension and sat with Mow and Sylph and rushed out every now and then to have a run around. I don't think Glais thinks Mow and Sylph are much fun at the moment.:D
