Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Mine have gone the opposite way and started taking advantage of the gale force winds to come out and scratch up all my very plot-proud neighbours' onion sets, while there's no humans around to chase them away

Yesterday I spent ages looking for the open thing of water Nora must've fallen in, before realising she'd apparently just been sitting out in the rain like a duck again.
Fancy sending a couple down here to show the field lot they need to toughen up?:lau

You need a Nora! I didn't think to get a photo yesterday but she looked a lot like the negative of this, only less furious about it.

Maybe I could set up some kind of combined holiday boarding & bootcamp for soft, southern chickens :p

I had a medical appointment a couple of days ago. They took my blood pressure, pulse, etc.
My blood pressure read 106 over 63 with a pulse of 53 beats per minute.
The nurse asked me how I kept it that low, yaga, Tai Chi, and the other usual suspects were suggested. "Nope" I said, "don't do any of those anymore. I watch chickens instead."

I don't think the nurse took me seriously.:p
I have a couple of prescriptions I need to collect monthly and every time I do, I get pestered about when I might be hatching chicks next. One of the pharmacists gave me a couple of small oral syringes for free when I needed one for a chick and now they want me to bring one in at some point as real life chicken tax!

Here's Nora on a drier day recently for thread tax. She really doesn't like being photographed.

I remember talking to the anesthesiologist about chickens while they were sewing me up once after a c-section. It seemed surreal in a way but it was keeping my head on straight at the moment.

The girls refuse to come out. Not out of the run, but out of the coop itself. lol
This is why you need a large coop with at least 4 sqft per chicken, when you have long cold winters with snow.

Mine had only 3 sqft roofed space with 8 bantam chickens. It must have been stressful when the snow stayed for about a week at the start of January. We only had snow for a whole week in 2021 and 2026 since I started having chickens.

I sure would like something more spacious than my prefabs if we had so much snow every year. Think of it: a partly /temporary covered run would be okay too if there is not too much snow. I still have the cover of the first run (party tent cover).

You can see the frame of the party tent behind the prefab if you look closely 👀.

I’ve found a highly-recommended jack of all trades (someone who can do a little bit of everything), and if he’s willing, a full roof is going on the run very soon. That will serve for their getting-around room. 24 sq ft per chicken. Also electricity!

They’re not squabbling, they’re just discussing things in a “can you believe this?!” tone. They’ll come out to eat.
