Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Ohhh, look, it's almost spring like. Two and a half hours. Everyone came out but Mow headed back to the run (there were other people in the field this afternoon and that may be a factor) but when I went to get her she went on to the field without complaint and once she'd located Glais and Sylph, went over to join them.
One of the other people had dug over a section of their plot which they made a B line for. All very chilled. Great to see them out in the sunshine roaming around.
One can definitely tell Sylph is Fret's daughter, she flat out drama about every little displeasure and as equally determined to get her way. You may remember early in the thread Fret's determination to roost next to Henry when they roosted on the nest bar in the coop run. It used to look something like this with the Ex Battery hens roosting in the coop.

Sylph is much the same at roosting time, such a vocal fuss.
This is Mow's leg I cut most of the crap away from. Not a great picture.

I sat with a friend at the top of the field and chatted enjoying the sunshine and watching the chickens for a while, got some more iodine and Vaseline in between the toes on Mow's feet once my friend had left, did the chores, offered a second feeding opportunity close to dusk which Mow and Glais had a nibble at on principle, closed up and headed back to the city.
I didn't take any roosting pictures because Sylph had only just finished complaining and I didn't want to set her off again; she's loud!

@BDutch I must have missed this info - where did Perris go?
She is still around. But not on this thread since she was insulted by a very moody Shad who was coping with a lot of disasters back then. Hope his family is okay now. He didn’t talk much about his private life since. :hugs

You can search for a persons history if you want to know where someone posted. Fill in the name in search, nothing else: bingo.

There is a bit more to it than Shad being moody. One would have to have followed the events of the past few months very carefully to understand.
I could have handled the situation better, but I didn't and that's unfortunately part of being human. Sometimes life does everything at once acts and under such conditions ones judgement is effected.

I generally don't post much detail about my private life.

Lovely update. Pleasant weather changes everything. Good to see Mow's leg up close. It looks much improved.

Andre and Merle, our feather-legged Marans brothers, both have funky leg issues, from wacky scales to curled-up outer toenails. I may post photos at some point for advice on whether to intervene.

Merle does the leg-kick thing while walking. A feather growing on the bottom of his foot may be to blame. Meanwhile, it's hard to tell if Andre is troubled by thick leg scales or if his bumbling gait is fully the fault of orthopedic issues.

He'd have trouble with under-foot feathers as well if he didn't live with Peck, who came by her name honestly and is happy to help out by wrenching feather from foot at the merest hint of irritation.

"Shall I peck this for you?"

Recently, Peck has also been great at "treating" Andre for mites by removing select feathers around his comb and tail, 2 of his mite hotspots. Andre has so many nooks & crannies that it's hard to effectively treat for mites, but Peck's method works exceptionally well.

Here's 3 minutes of Peck grooming Andre. I had just noticed mites on his neck and had mite treatment in hand when Peck beat me to it. I obviously held off on dusting him and let Peck work. There were no mites to be found on Andre for weeks afterward.
