Some of you may recall my guineas-and-snow story, where my guineas became so afraid of snow that they clung to a large shrub for 4 whole days and nights in 15 degree weather! I couldn't get them out no matter how hard I tried, and I finally gave up, figuring they would starve to death or die of thirst. But after 4 days the snow melted and they hopped down and went about their business!

The longer I have guineas, the more I realize how weird they act.

I thought it would be fun to share weird and funny guineas stories...

Here's one more... if my 5 guineas are going inside the coop to roost in the evening, and I come out to shut the door, they will all charge OUT of the coop and run away temporarily, only to circle around and head back inside. They need total privacy, apparently, in order to feel comfortable going to roost.

Mine seem to have an aversion to chickens that are bigger than they are. More specifically, they seem to hate big red chickens. That's fine for me, since I hate big red chickens too, but since almost all of my dad's flock are RIR, this makes for some funny times around here!

Funny Guinea stories. . .I'm not sure how funny they are but weird ones I have aplenty.
We first got guineas seven years ago. It was difficult to find information on them but I ordered a book and read it thoroughly so I'd know what to expect. Considering that guineas don't fight (according to the book mind you) the turkey tom who got his but kicked literally and figuratively by a guinea fowl probably wishes that the guineas read that book instead of me. My guineas also enjoy fighting with roosters. They jump up and kick like other birds but they don;t seem to stop once they start.
I also didn't know that first year that they eat small mammals until we had them dropping dead on the roosts over night. . .over and over. No real signs of anything but dead guineas in the morning. I finally opened one up to look for internal signs of lesions, illness, disease, whatever it was that was devastating our guineas. In the crop I found the bright green unmistakeably colored poison from inside our locked bait stations. The guineas were apparently eating the dead or dying rats that ate poison from the bait stations in the poultry sheds. We almost never saw the dying/dead rats but apparently the guineas did.
I have many dozen more guinea stories. Loyal until death stories, great parents stories, how to drown in water that doesn't go over your knees stories, how to get caught in weird places stories. But I'll bet that other folks have great stories to share.

I don't have guineas yet but want some, so I called our zoo to see if they ever had extras that they would sell. (they sell extra goats & lambs). They said the guineas kept beating up the peacocks so they sold them to another zoo.

I live off a dead end road with only one neighbor up the hill. One day I hear honking. Look out to see a car (friends of the neighbors) stopped in the road.......yeah you guessed it. Guineas had encricled the car and were squacking at it as they walked around and around. I had to go out and shoo them off the road.


Guineas would roost in a tree about 60ft up the hill behind the house. One night I am awoken by what souded like someone throwing a basketball against the back of the house. I pull on my robe and grab the .22. Just as I step onto the back porch a guinea flies off the roost and smacks into the back of the house at full speed. Both birds looked a little shell shocked for a few minutes, but were back where they were supposed to be the next morning.

One of my guinea hens is in love with my big BO roo. She won't go anywhere with the other guineas. She sleeps under the wing of the BO roo each night and follows him around all day. I've never seen the other guineas be mean to her or anything apparently she thinks she is a BO instead of a guinea.

OMG, these got me laughing so hard...

Did I tell you how my guineas followed a skunk around one day? It came out in the very early evening while it was still light, and they followed it around for an hour, poor thing. They looked like a gaggle of teenage girls, hanging back about 5 feet, chattering away at it, doing occasional "rushes" at it in pairs and then running back to the group. They followed it everywhere -- to the compost pile, under the fence, across the road! Like curious little monkeys. I took pics that i'll post in a little while. I was laughing my head off at them.

I always tell my RIR chickens GOODNIGHT GIRLS., when I shut the coop up at night. since all the guineas roost in a cedar tree across from the chicken coop they squawk untill I tell them goodnight girls, then they settle down and go to bed.Best watchdogs? I ever had marrie

Last summer, one of my hens was walking down the railroad tracks that run by our farm. The train had just pulled out of the elevator, so it was moving slow. Starting blowing the horn at the guinea, giving her plenty of time to move.

I grab the binocs to get a closer look. The hen stops and looks around as if she is wondering where the noise is coming from. I am screaming in my head...move you idiot. The train is still coming and blowing the horn. The guinea walks a bit farther and stops to look around again. The train is picking up speed, blowing the horn, while the guinea is just walking faster down the tracks.

By now, I have realized just how dumb these birds really are. She is flying down the tracks, really low but fast. The train is moving faster, horn still blowing. I couldnt take my eyes off the scene. I swear the train "goosed" the hen in the rear end, because she sqwauked loudly and flew off to the left. I tought for sure she was dead. As the train passed, she flew into the yard. One feather was bent out of place.

Almost as good. I am headed out our driveway and notice a car on the road going real slow and the driver is obviously looking at something. I pull out of our road and think to myself, "lets go old man, take a picture but get out of the way. Geez, people can be nosy" THEN..I see what he is looking at. There on the center yellow line stands one of my guineas; standing straight up, neck stretched out; checking out the car.

Mine hate all my chickens that are in pens! I have three cochins and 8 peacocks that free range during the day and my guineas are ok with them. (except the rooster) But when I try to let my others free range they attack my poor chickens! This is a little wierd, because they were hatched with the chickens! The Cochin rooster gets chased around the yard at least once a week. Poor thing, he has a train of guineas trailing after him, and he sure does not run fast!

My guineas also come when I whistle for my dogs! My dogs don't come, but the guineas do!
