Share your chicken math story!

Back before I had chickens I thought I'd maybe get 4 to 6 and that would surely be plenty to satisfy the chicken need, so naturally I now have 19 chickens with an order for chicks scheduled for the end of the month LOL.

High five for chicken math accomplished!

I know this post is older, but I legit just came to talk about our most recent chicken math story, so I figured this must be the perfect place!

So, around 15 months ago, we had no chickens. ---> Count: 0 chickens

Suddenly, we had two young (maybe 6 week old) pullets just meander onto our front yard (in our fairly suburban neighborhood) at dusk. Like when chickens would normally go back to their coop. Our neighbor had brought it to our attention, and we asked around to see if they belonged to someone, but nobody knew where they had come from. I couldn't very well just leave them out in the wild to be eaten by raccoons. And one wasn't in good shape to begin with. --->
Count: 2 chickens.

I did everything I possibly could to nurse the one little sick chicken back to health, but we lost her, and I don't know that I have ever been so crushed in my life as I was that day, and for many days after. ---> Count: 1 chicken.

My remaining OG chicken was obviously broken hearted. It was very clear that losing her friend meant we could also lose her from being so devastated and lonely if I didn't do something. ---> Count: still 1 chicken.

I ended up ordering 3 pullets for her to be friends with because I couldn't stand the thought of her being so sad. I figured, if 3 is the minimum recommended flock size, then I better get an extra chicken, just in case.
---> Count: 4 chickens.

This past spring, my husband and I went to get more chicken feed (you guys already know this story from experience, I'm sure). Ended up coming home with 4 chicks.
---> Count: 8 chickens.

The chicks I was supposed to have purchased (per my request) were bantams, but they gave me marans instead. The whole (mostly) reason I even ended up getting them was because I currently have one bantam that constantly gets picked on, so I felt like she needed some friends. Now that we were going to have 4 more giant chickens and no bantams for my current, friendless chicken, I felt even worse. So I called around everywhere until I found somewhere that had bantam chicks in stock, drove all the way there, picked up 4 of them, and brought them home.
---> COUNT: 12 CHICKENS.

Finally, right as soon as we get all the chicks moved out to the yard and situated, guess what happens? My original lone bantam sudden goes broody. I obviously can't let her get any more upset that she was the only bantam for so long by allowing her to sit on a nest without anything to show for it. So I ordered 4 hatching eggs that will be here within a few days 🙃. (I ordered 4 because we don't know if any of them will hatch, so I figured I better get extra so that she'll get at least maybe 1 baby to take care of and make her proud.)
----> Count: undetermined. ( 12 <= 16 depending on hatch rate.)

There it is, folks. The perfect chicken math demonstration. These animals are just the absolute best.

My husband is the victim of chicken math. We started with 4. I was content (not really) but I talked myself out of new chicks every single time I saw them because I knew if we got more we would need a bigger coop. Well, I had a rough week this last week and I came home to 4 new baby chicks as a surprise. So now we have 8 and need a bigger coop 🤣😅

Oh yeah, we are waiting on our new shed to get here so we can convert it into a big, roomy chicken coop. Currently we have 3 smaller, separate ones, definitely not big enough to accommodate all of our growing chickens lol.
